Abstract

Here, I use Supergravity as a test case to study the role and uses of elegance/simplicity in formulating and evaluating physical models, whose sole criterion is of course truth: an observationally confirmed description of Nature within a certain range of scales.

On the fakeness of fake supergravity

We revisit and complete the study of curved BPS-domain walls in matter-coupled 5D, N=2 supergravity and carefully analyze the relation to gravitational theories known as ''fake supergravities.'' We first show that curved BPS-domain walls require the presence of nontrivial hypermultiplet scalars, whereas walls that are solely supported by vector multiplet scalars are necessarily flat, due to the constraints from very special geometry. We then recover fake supergravity as the effective description of true supergravity where one restricts the attention to the flowing scalar field of a given BPS-domain wall. We present new formulas for n-particle tree-level scattering amplitudes of six-dimensional N = (1,1) super Yang-Mills (SYM) and N = (2,2) supergravity (SUGRA). They are written as integrals over the moduli space of certain rational maps localized on the (n – 3)! solutions of the scattering equations. Due to the properties of spinor-helicity variables in six dimensions, the even-n and odd-n formulas are quite different and have to be treated separately. Here, I analyze the possible relevance of LIGO’s gravitational wave detection to the viability of massive gravity models. In GR, a wave zone, where the linearized approximation holds, is guaranteed to exist and the observed wave’s amplitude profile can be sufficiently related to the emitting strong field interior to confirm that, in this case, it was due to an inspiraling black hole merger.
