Title: Measurement of the decays $B \to η ℓ ν_{ℓ}$ and $B \to η^{'} ℓ ν_{ℓ}$ in fully reconstructed events at Belle

Abstract

We report branching fraction measurements of the decays B⁺ → ηℓ⁺νℓ and B⁺ → η'ℓ⁺νℓ based on 711 fb^–1 of data collected near the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle experiment at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e⁺e^– collider. This data sample contains 772 million BB¯ events. One of the two B mesons is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode. Among the remaining (“signal-B”) daughters, we search for the η meson in two decay channels, η → γγ and η → π⁺π^–π⁰, and reconstruct the η' meson in η' → ηπ⁺π^– with subsequent decay of the η into γγ. Combining the two η modes and using an extended maximum likelihood, the B⁺ → ηℓ⁺νℓ branching fraction is measured to be (4.2 ± 1.1(stat.) ± 0.3(syst.)) × 10^–5. For B⁺ → η'ℓ⁺νℓ, we observe no significant signal and set an upper limit of 0.72 × 10^–4 at 90% confidence level.

The sensitivity of the rare decays η^(') → π⁰γγ and η' → ηγγ to signatures of a leptophobic B boson in the MeV–GeV mass range is analyzed in this work. By adding an explicit B-boson resonance exchange, η → Bγ → π⁰γγ, to the Standard Model contributions from vector and scalar meson exchanges, and employing experimental data for the associated branching ratios, it allows us to improve the current constraints on the B-boson mass mB and coupling to Standard Model particles α_B. Based on a sample of 1.31 × 10⁹ J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, the matrix elements for the decays η' → ηπ⁺π^- and η' → ηπ⁰π⁰ are determined using 351,016 η' → (η → γγ)π⁺π^- and 56,249 η' → (η → γγ)π⁰π⁰ events with background levels less than 1%. Two commonly used representations are used to describe the Dalitz plot density. We find that an assumption of a linear amplitude does not describe the data well.
