Rapid bifurcations in the plasma response to slowly varying n=2 magnetic fields are observed as the plasma transitions into and out of edge localized mode (ELM) suppression. The rapid transition to ELM suppression is characterized by an increase in the toroidal rotation and a reduction in the electron pressure gradient at the top of the pedestal which reduces the perpendicular electron flow to near zero. These events occur simultaneously with an increase in the inner wall magnetic response. Validation of density pump-out by pedestal-foot magnetic island formation prior to ELM suppression in KSTAR and DIII-D tokamaks

TM1 nonlinear two-fluid simulations reveal key characteristics of density pump-out caused by pedestal-foot island formation when applying resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP). These characteristics include a bifurcation in pump-out with a low RMP coil current threshold, a sensitivity of pump-out magnitude to q95, and the magnitude of pump-out scaling as the square root of the RMP coil current. Dedicated experiments are carried out in the KSTAR and DIII-D tokamaks to validate these features and show that: (1) a staircase bifurcation in density pump-out is observed when slowly ramping up the n = 1 RMP current, and the density fluctuations are found to be slightly decreased from the pedestal-foot to the pedestal-top; (2) the magnitude of density pump-out becomes weaker when decreasing q95 from 5.5 to 4.9, and a partial recovery of density pump-out is observed when q95 is ramped down to lower than 4.9; and (3) analysis of a DIII-D database of n = 3 RMP edge-localized mode control experiments finds that the magnitude of density pump-out is proportional to the square root of RMP coil current Δne/ne ∝more »« less

Pellet triggering of edge localized modes in low collisionality pedestals at DIII-D

Edge localized modes (ELMs) are triggered using deuterium pellets injected into plasmas with ITER-relevant low collisionality pedestals, and the resulting peak ELM energy fluence is reduced by approximately 25%–50% relative to natural ELMs destabilized at similar pedestal pressures. Cryogenically frozen deuterium pellets are injected from the low-field side of the DIII-D tokamak at frequencies lower than the natural ELM frequency, and heat flux is measured by infrared cameras. Ideal MHD pedestal stability calculations show that without pellet injection, these low collisionality pedestals were limited by their current density (peeling-limited) rather than their pressure gradient (ballooning-limited). We report the first observation of increased edge electron temperature turbulence correlated with changes in gradients and the ELM suppression time which occurs after the application of resonant magnetic perturbations (RMP) on DIII-D H-mode plasmas. This increase (T^~_e/T_e approximately doubles) occurs in the region extending from the top of the pedestal outward to the upper part of the edge steep gradient region. Three-dimensional equilibria and island energy transport due to resonant magnetic perturbation edge localized mode suppression on DIII-D

In this research, we conducted experiments in the DIII-D tokamak that show that the plasma responds to resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) with toroidalmode numbers of n=2 and n=3 without field line reconnection, consistent with resistive magnetohydrodynamic predictions, while a strong nonlinear bifurcation is apparent when edge localized modes(ELMs) are suppressed. The magnetic response associated with this bifurcation is localized to the high field side of the machine and exhibits a dominant n=1 component despite the application of a constant amplitude, slowly toroidally rotating, n=2 applied field.
