A number of recent applications of jet substructure, in particular searches for light new particles, require substructure observables that are decorrelated with the jet mass. In this paper we introduce the Convolved SubStructure (CSS) approach, which uses a theoretical understanding of the observable to decorrelate the complete shape of its distribution. This decorrelation is performed by convolution with a shape function whose parameters and mass dependence are derived analytically. Inverting the mass hierarchy of jet quenching effects with prompt b-jet substructure

In these proceedings, we discuss the role of heavy quark mass on the formation of parton showers. Mass effects are not well understood when parton branching occurs in nuclear matter, such as the quark-gluon plasma. Recently, a theoretically consistent picture of open heavy flavor production in ultra relativistic nuclear collisions has begun to emerge based on effective theories of QCD, such as soft collinear effective theory with Glauber gluons. Identification of flow background to subtract in jet-like azimuthal correlations

We derive an analytical form for flow background to jet-like azimuthal correlations in a cluster approach. We argue that the elliptic flow parameter to use in a jet-correlation background is that from a two-particle method excluding nonflow correlation unrelated to the reaction plane, but including cross-terms between cluster correlation and cluster flow. We verify our result with Monte Carlo simulations. We discuss implications of our findings in the context of jet-like correlations from STAR and PHENIX.
