A transition metal hexacyanoferrate product CsTreat has been utilized at industrial scale for radioactive cesium separation at several nuclear power plants (NPPs) in several countries. A granular hexacyanoferrate ion exchanger has been used in packed-bed column mode operations for the removal of cesium from a variety of wastewater types. CsTreat beds have successfully purified both high-salt evaporator concentrates and dilute floor drain waters at NPPs in Finland and the United States. Furthermore, medium-active reprocessing solutions, containing high concentrations of sodium nitrate, have been decontaminated by a CsTreat bed at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute. Using copper hexacyanoferrate (II) impregnated zeolite for cesium removal from radioactive liquid waste

Experiments were performed to obtain fundamental data on cesium ion removal characteristics of metal hexacyanoferrate (II) impregnated zeolite in radioactive liquid waste containing a large amount of sodium sulfate. Copper hexacyanoferrate (II) impregnated zeolite (CuFZ) was prepared and showed a high selectivity for cesium ion. The material was suitable for use in an ion exchange column. This exchanger could selectively and efficiently remove the cesium even if there is 15 wt% Na/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ in the solution. Potassium nickel hexacyanoferrate(II) (KNiFC)-loaded silica gels were prepared by successive impregnation of macro pores with Ni(NO{sub 3}){sub 2} and K{sub 4}Fe(CN){sub 6} solutions. The KNiFC precipitates uniformly dispersed in the matrix of silica gel, and the loading percentage of KNiFC increased with the number impregnation cycles. Selective removal of cesium from sodium nitrate solutions by potassium nickel hexacyanoferrate-loaded chabazites

Potassium nickel hexacyanoferrate(II)s (KNiFC) were incorporated in the porous matrix of chabazite by successive impregnation with Ni(NO{sub 3}){sub 2} and K{sub 4}Fe(CN){sub 6}. The loading percentage of KNiFC crystals on chabazite increased with repeated times of impregnation. The ion-exchange equilibrium of Cs{sup +} in KNiFC-loaded chabazite (CFC) was attained within 2 days. Cesium removal from low-level liquid wastes with hexacyanoferrate(II) compounds

Experimental studies are being carried out to develop improved methods for decontamination of both currently generated and stored low-level liquid wastes (LLLW) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). These waste streams include the high-volume, but very low level, process waste and a variety of waste concentrates that consist of a smaller volume of higher activity and high salt content.
