Study on limiting efficiencies of a-Si:H/μc-Si:H-based single-nanowire solar cells under single and tandem junction configurations

Detailed balance calculations are presented for a-Si:H/μc-Si:H-based single- and tandem-junction single-nanowire solar cells (S- and T-SNSCs). Our study is based on three-dimensional finite-element electromagnetic simulation and thermodynamic balanced analysis, which includes radiative and Auger recombinations simultaneously. We quantify and compare the limiting short-circuit current densities, open-circuit voltages, and light-conversion efficiencies of these highly compact photovoltaic cells, addressing especially the effect of Auger recombination on the open-circuit voltages of SNSCs. Results show that tandem design leads to much higher light-conversion capability than μc-Si:H S-SNSCs, but exhibits superior performance than a-Si:H S-SNSCs only for cells with large radii.

The efficiency of single-junction solar cells is bounded by the Shockley–Queisser limit of 41%. However, standard derivation for this limit constrains the system to be reciprocal, and what non-reciprocity can bring for single-junction solar cells remains yet to be clarified. Here, we prove that even with non-reciprocity, the ultimate efficiency of single-junction solar cells is still subject to the Shockley–Queisser limit. Here, we show that the Shockley–Queisser limit does not rely on the detailed balance, but rather is a consequence of the integrated balance between the absorption and emission processes, as required by the second law of thermodynamics.

A 2-terminal perovskite/silicon multijunction solar cell enabled by a silicon tunnel junction

With the advent of efficient high-bandgap metal-halide perovskite photovoltaics, an opportunity exists to make perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells. We fabricate a monolithic tandem by developing a silicon-based interband tunnel junction that facilitates majority-carrier charge recombination between the perovskite and silicon sub-cells. We demonstrate a 1 cm² 2-terminal monolithic perovskite/silicon multijunction solar cell with a V_OC as high as 1.65 V. As a result, we achieve a stable 13.7% power conversion efficiency with the perovskite as the current-limiting sub-cell, and identify key challenges for this device architecture to reach efficiencies over 25%.
