Topological insulators are of interest for many applications in electronics and optoelectronics, but harnessing their unique properties requires detailed understanding and control of charge injection at electrical contacts. Here we present large-scale ab initio calculations of the electronic properties of Au, Ni, Pt, Pd, and graphene contacts to Bi₂Se₃. We show that regardless of the metal, the Fermi level is located in the conduction band, leading to n-type Ohmic contact to the first quintuplet. We present that the emerging material, topological insulator, has provided new opportunities for spintronic applications, owing to its strong spin-orbit character. Topological insulator based heterostructures that display spin-charge coupling driven by topology at surfaces have great potential for the realization of novel spintronic devices. Here, we report the observation of anomalous photogalvanic effect in (Bi_0.5Sb_0.5)₂Te₃ thin films grown on GaAs substrate. We demonstrate that the magnitude, direction, and temperature dependence of the helicity-dependent photocurrent (HDPC) can be modulated by the gate voltage. A topological insulator (TI) interfaced with a magnetic insulator (MI) may host an anomalous Hall effect (AHE), a quantum AHE, and a topological Hall effect (THE). Recent experiments show that topological surface states (TSS) in topological insulators (TI) can be exploited to manipulate magnetic ordering in ferromagnets. In principle, TSS should also exist for other topological materials, but it remains unexplored as to whether such states can also be utilized to manipulate ferromagnets. In this paper, current-induced magnetization switching enabled by TSS in a non-TI topological material, namely, a topological Dirac semimetal α-Sn, is reported. Changes of Magnetism in a Magnetic Insulator due to Proximity to a Topological Insulator

We report here the modification of magnetism in a magnetic insulator Y₃Fe₅O₁₂ thin film by topological surface states (TSS) in an adjacent topological insulator Bi₂Se₃ thin film. Ferromagnetic resonance measurements show that the TSS in Bi2Se3 produces a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, results in a decrease in the gyromagnetic ratio, and enhances the damping in Y₃Fe₅O₁₂. Such TSS-induced changes become more pronounced as the temperature decreases from 300 to 50 K. These results suggest a completely new approach for control of magnetism in magnetic thin films.
