Biogenic nano-magnetite and nano-zero valent iron treatment of alkaline Cr(VI) leachate and chromite ore processing residue

Highly reactive nano-scale biogenic magnetite (BnM), synthesized by the Fe(III)-reducing bacterium Geobacter sulfurreducens, was tested for the potential to remediate alkaline Cr(VI) contaminated waters associated with chromite ore processing residue (COPR). The performance of this biomaterial, targeting aqueous Cr(VI) removal, was compared to a synthetic alternative, nano-scale zero valent iron (nZVI). Samples of highly contaminated alkaline groundwater and COPR solid waste were obtained from a contaminated site in Glasgow, UK. During batch reactivity tests, Cr(VI) removal from groundwater was inhibited by ~25% (BnM) and ~50% (nZVI) when compared to the treatment of less chemically complex model pH 12 Cr(VI) solutions.more »« less

Research suggests these fungi reduce Fe³⁺ to promote oxygen radical generation resulting in depolymerization of the wood cell wall. High levels of Mn are also found in wood decayed by brown rot fungi. However, little is known about the oxidation states of Fe and Mn during the decay process. Real-Time XANES Measurement of Se Reduction by Zerovalent Iron in a Flow-through Cell, and Accompanying Se Isotope Measurements

An anoxic flow-through cell experiment was conducted to examine mechanisms controlling the real-time reduction of selenate (Se(VI)) by zerovalent iron (ZVI), which is commonly used in permeable reactive barriers to treat dissolved contaminants including Se(VI). Changes in selenium (Se) isotope composition were examined by increasing the influent Se concentration over time, thus changing the proportion of Se removed from solution. At the conclusion of the experiment, an anoxic Se-free solution was pumped through the cell to assess the stability of the reaction products. At all stages, X-ray absorption data were obtained from the solid phase and Se isotope data from the aqueous phase. The rates of Cr(VI) removal from the aqueous phase by zero-valent iron, Fe(0), was measured under flow conditions. The intent of this work was to generate removal rate coefficients that would be applicable to the Reactive Well Technology, a groundwater remediation technology that replaces the sand in a filter pack of a conventional well with a reactive material, such as Fe(0).
