The chemical state of nitrogen, aluminum, oxygen and zinc in Al-N co-doped p-type ZnO thin films was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). N{sub 1s} peak were detected in both the two p-type ZnO thin films, showing two components. The higher binding energy peak may be due to the Al-No-H species, and the lower one perhaps derive from the (NH{sub 2}){sup -} cluster for the ammonia introduction. These two peaks both contribute to the p-type behavior in the ZnO films. A symmetry 74.4 eV binding energy in Al{sub 2p3/2} photoelectron peaks revealed an Al-N bonding state, a key factor tomore » the co-doping method.« less

Hydrogenated diamond-like Carbon (DLC) films have been deposited on Si substrates using CH{sub 4}-based radio-frequency plasmas. The films have been doped with nitrogen by addition of either N{sub 2} or NH{sub 3} into the source gas mixture, producing films with up to 16% and 25% N content, respectively. The effect of additions of Ne to these gas mixtures has been investigated as a possible method to increase the growth rate and the N-content of the films. Lightweight, robust, and flexible single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) materials can be processed inexpensively using solution-based techniques, similar to other organic semiconductors. In contrast to many semiconducting polymers, semiconducting SWCNTs (s-SWCNTs) represent unique one-dimensional organic semiconductors with chemical and physical properties that facilitate equivalent transport of electrons and holes. Thermally induced structural changes in amorphous carbon films observed with ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy

We used the characteristic changes in the electronic structure of the valence band of amorphous carbon films upon the formation of graphitic clusters to monitor the temperature induced graphitization of a variety of hydrogen-containing (a-C:H) as well as hydrogen-free (a-C) films. The valence band spectra of the films, which were prepared {ital in situ} by ion-beam deposition and electron beam evaporation, were determined using photoelectron spectroscopy with excitation energies in the ultraviolet regime (ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy, HeI, h{nu}=21.22 eV and HeII, h{nu}=40.82 eV). Effects and thermal stability of hydrogen microwave plasma treatment on tetrahedral amorphous carbon films by in situ ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy

This paper reports a comprehensive experimental study on the effects of hydrogen microwave plasma treatment on nonhydrogenated high sp{sup 3} content tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) film. In this study, a surface C-H dipole layer was first observed by high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, showing the presence of C-H bonding states. This resulted in the enhancement of electron field emission of the plasma treated films by largely lowering the turn-on field.
