The upper subcontinental lithospheric mantle below the French Massif Central is more oxidized than the average continental lithosphere, although the origin of this anomaly remains unknown. Using iron oxidation analysis in clinopyroxene, oxybarometry, and melt inclusions in mantle xenoliths, we show that widespread infiltration of volatile (HCSO)-rich silicic melts played a major role in this oxidation. We propose the first comprehensive model of magmatism and mantle oxidation at an intraplate setting. Incorporation of small molecules in silicate melts may provide an important mechanism for storing noble gases in the deep Earth, yet the means by which chemically inert noble gases enter and are retained in silica-based materials is not understood. High pressure, room temperature sound velocity measurements on silica and natural basalt glasses in different pressure-transmitting media reveal that neon enters the structure of silicate glasses and enhances their elastic strengths, whereas an ethanol-methanol mixture does not. The amount of hydrogen stored in the Earth's interior is important for a range of issues, including the volatile incorporation during the Earth formation and the co-evolution of the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, and the interior. Recent experiments found titanium bearing ε-FeOOH in a hydrous basaltic system at 12–19 GPa and 1300 K. Pyrite-type FeOOH was found to be stable at pressures higher than 80 GPa.
