Abstract The hydrogenolysis of mono‐ and dinuclear Pd ^II hydroxides was investigated both experimentally and computationally. It was found that the dinuclear μ‐hydroxide complexes {[(PCN ^R )Pd] ₂ (μ‐OH)}(OTf) (PCN ^H =1‐[3‐[(di‐ tert ‐butylphosphino)methyl]phenyl]‐1 H ‐pyrazole; PCN ^Me =1‐[3‐[(di‐ tert ‐butylphosphino)methyl]phenyl]‐5‐methyl‐1 H ‐pyrazole) react with H ₂ to form the analogous dinuclear hydride species {[(PCN ^R )Pd] ₂ (μ‐H)}(OTf). The dinuclear μ‐hydride complexes were fully characterized, and are rare examples of structurally characterized unsupported singly bridged μ‐H Pd ^II dimers. A kineticmechanistic study of actinide hydrocarbyl ligand hydrogenolysis (An-R + H/sub 2/ ..-->.. An-H + RH) is reported. For the complex Cp'/sub 2/TH(CH/sub 2/-t-Bu)(O-t-Bu)(Cp' = eta/sup 5/-Me/sub 5/C/sub 5/), the rate law is first-order in organoactinide and first-order in H/sub 2/, with k/sub H2/k/sub D2/ = 2.5 (4) and k/sub THF/k/sub toluene/ = 2.9 (4). The bicyclic diphosphines trans- and cis-2,3-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)-5-norbornene (dpmn) react with 1,2-Os₃(CO)₁₀(MeCN)₂ (1) to furnish the corresponding ligand-bridged clusters Os₃(CO)₁₀(trans-dpmn) (2) and Os₃(CO)₁₀(cis-dpmn) (3). Both new products have been isolated and the molecular structures established by X-ray diffraction analyses. The dihydroxyl-bridged cluster 1,2-Os₃(CO)₈(μ-OH)₂(cis-dpmn) (4), which accompanied the formation of 3 in one reaction, has been isolated and characterized by mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography.
