The addition of phase change materials (PCMs) has been proposed as a way to mitigate thermal cracking in cementitious materials. However, the addition of PCMs, i.e., soft inclusions, degrades the compressive strength of cementitious composites. From a strength-of-materials viewpoint, such reductions in strength are suspected to increase the tendency of cementitious materials containing PCMs to crack under load (e.g., volume instability-induced stresses resulting from thermal and/or hygral deformations). Based on detailed assessments of free and restrained shrinkage, elastic modulus, and tensile strength, this study shows that the addition of PCMs does not alter the cracking sensitivity of the material. A novel experimental technique was developed to assess the cracking potential of cement-based materials when used as a bonded overlay. Specimens were cast directly on to a substrate and the assembly was subjected to a drying environment to induce cracking. Lengths and widths of the resulting cracks in the overlay were monitored as a function of time. The use of fibers was found to be very effective not only in reducing the widths of the shrinkage cracks but also in allowing multiple cracking to occur. Incorporating PCM-enabled thermal energy storage into 3D printable cementitious composites

This paper delineates the feasibility of incorporating microencapsulated phase change materials (mPCM) into 3D printable cementitious composite materials. A comprehensive experimental program was carried out to evaluate the impacts of mPCM on the printability, microstructures, mechanical and thermal properties of cementitious 3D printing ‘inks’.
