Preparation and characterization of tungsten oxide fortified poly(urea-formaldehyde) microcapsules for self-healing coatings

Radiation-resistant poly(urea-formaldehyde) (PUF) microcapsules with a bisphenol A diglycidyl ether/butyl glycidyl ether core were prepared via emulsion polymerization. Tungsten oxide (WO₃) nanoparticles were incorporated into the polymer shell to improve radiation resistance of the resultant PUF microcapsules. Microcapsules prepared with modified WO₃ nanoparticles had an average diameter of 117 μm, an encapsulation efficiency of 48%, and evenly dispersed nanoparticle incorporation of 3.5 wt%. Modification of dense WO₃ nanoparticles was necessary for even dispersion into PUF microcapsule shells. Polyelectrolyte microcapsules represent versatile stimuli-responsive structures that enable the encapsulation, protection, and release of active agents. Their conventional preparation methods, however, tend to be time-consuming, yield low encapsulation efficiency, and seldom allow for the dual incorporation of hydrophilic and hydrophobic materials, limiting their widespread utilization. In this work, we present a method to fabricate stimuli-responsive polyelectrolyte microcapsules in one step based on nanoscale interfacial complexation in emulsions (NICE) followed by spontaneous droplet hatching. Preparation of polyelectrolyte microcapsules with silver and gold nanoparticles in a shell and the remote destruction of microcapsules under laser irradiation

A number of methods are proposed for encapsulating silver and gold nanoparticles into shells of polyelectrolyte microcapsules for the purpose of increasing the sensitivity of microcapsules to laser radiation. It is shown that capsules with nanocomposite shells can be remotely damaged under laser radiation with different powers and wavelengths. The sensitivity of capsules with silver and gold nanoparticles in shells to this radiation can be controlled by varying the conditions used for the preparation of the capsules.
