In this study, differential X-ray absorption contrast tomography was performed on model ceramic composite systems to image the 3D spatial distributions of Ga and Nd containing phases. The model material systems were fabricated such that they contained two constituent phases. Ga–doped Ba hollandite (Ba_1.33Ga_2.66Ti_5.34O₁₆), and pyrochlore (Nd₂Ti₂O₇) which are under consideration as nuclear waste immobilization matrices. Two complementary techniques have been used to characterize the 3D distribution of phases. Three-dimensional mapping of crystalline ceramic waste form materials

Here, we demonstrate the use of synchrotron-based, transmission X-ray microscopy (TXM) and scanning electron microscopy to image the 3-D morphologies and spatial distributions of Ga-doped phases within model, single- and two-phase waste form material systems. Gallium doping levels consistent with those commonly used for nuclear waste immobilization (e.g., Ba_1.04Cs_0.24Ga_2.32Ti_5.68O₁₆) could be readily imaged. This analysis suggests that a minority phase with different stoichiometry/composition from the primary hollandite phase can be formed by the solid-state ceramic processing route with varying morphology (globular vs. cylindrical) as a function of Cs content. The structural transformations that occur when FeF3 is cycled at room temperature in a Li cell were investigated using a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD), pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, and magic-angle-spinning NMR spectroscopy. Two regions are seen on discharge. The first occurs between Li = 0 and 1.0 and involves an insertion reaction. This first region actually comprises two steps: First, a two-phase reaction between Li = 0 and 0.5 occurs, and the Li0.5FeF3 phase that is formed gives rise to a Li NMR resonance due to Li+ ions near both Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions. Steady-state thermomechanical finite element analysis of elastoviscoplastic metal forming processes

Extrusion and rolling processes exhibiting large amounts of plastic flow are analyzed using a finite element technique that is based on a modified creeping viscous flow approximation. The technique, called the initial stress-rate method, iteratively corrects creeping viscous flow solutions to generate results that include elastic response. The momentum equations have been coupled with the energy equation to provide the capability to predict thermomechanical response during forming operations.
