The title cluster, a deactivation product in the catalytic dehydrogenation of glycerol, was characterized by XRD, DFT calculations, HRMS, FTIR spectroscopy, and NMR spectroscopy. Experimental/computational studies located the 14 H ligands, and all 1H and 13C{1H} NMR resonances were assigned. The structure contains an unprecedented Ir6H14 core with two CO and eight IMe ligands.

In this work, the two title clusters were formed during iridium-catalyzed glycerol dehydrogenation and display a remarkably high NHC content. They were crystallized in either agarose or polyethylene oxide gel matrices, while more conventional crystallization techniques proved unsuccessful. Cluster [Ir₄(IMe)₈H₉]³⁺, with a net charge of +3, was only crystallizable with a polyoxometalate Keggin trianion. The crystal packing of this intercluster compound is discussed. Computational studies position the iridium hydrides and provide insights into the bonding.

A free energy map interconnecting nine tungsten complexes has been determined based on chemical equilibria and electrochemical data in MeCN solution (T = 22 °C). Homolytic W-H bond dissociation free energies (BDFEs) are 59.3(3) kcal mol^-1 for CpW(CO)2(IMes)H and 59(1) kcal mol^-1 for the dihydride [CpW(CO)2(IMes)(H)₂]+. For the radical cation, [CpW(CO)2(IMes)H]•+, W-H bond homolysis to generate the 16-electron cation [CpW(CO)2(IMes)]+ is followed by MeCN uptake, with free energies for these steps being 51(1) kcal mol^-1 and -16.9(5) kcal mol^-1 respectively.
