Thermal expansion behavior and analysis for Al-Si eutectic alloys and the composite material systems: Al-SiC and Al-W

Analytical solutions were obtained for the thermal stress and strain of both concentric spheres and concentric cylinders comprised of dissimilar materials. Previously derived formulations for elastic interactions between the materials were extended to include a plastically deforming shell for both the spherical and cylindrical models. Thermal expansion measurements were performed on Al-Si alloys, aluminum alloy silicon carbide composites, and aluminium alloy tungsten composites. As a part of a program to evaluate the feasibility of using silicon encapsulated spheres of aluminum--silicon eutectic for thermal energy storage at temperatures near 650/degree/C, experiments were done to test the dimensional stability of the interface between silicon and the eutectic to thermal cycling. Cycled samples were sectioned and examined by optical micrography and by electron microscopy (SEM/EDX) techniques. Little or no degradation of the interface was observed at 600/degree/C (eutectic temperature 577/degree/C) while catastrophic degradation occurred at 700/degree/C. Internal stress and solid solubility effects on the thermal expansivity of Al-Si eutectic alloys

Thermal expansion measurements are reported for a number of as-cast Al-Si eutectic alloys including a Sr-modified alloy which gives nearly spherical Si particles. The measurements were obtained by heating and cooling over repeated temperature cycles between room temperature and 500/degree/C. In general, lower expansivity values were measured on the cooling cycle as compared with the heating cycle, resulting in a net positive permanent deformation at room temperature.
