Microstructure study of U–35 wt.% Zr alloy after quick annealing at 650 °C

Uranium-35wt.%zirconium (U-35wt.%Zr) alloy was annealed for 1 hour and 24 hours at 650 ºC and characterized to understand the early stage microstructure evolution. Dendritic microstructure with fine (~300 nm in length) α-U precipitates clustered between dendrite branches were observed in the 1-hour annealed sample. After 24-hour annealing 650 ºC, the α-U precipitates coarsened, and the dendritic microstructure disappeared due to microstructure homogenization. Furthermore, microchemical homogenization observed with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy analysis suggests that α-U precipitates are approaching thermodynamic equilibrium in the 24-hour annealed sample. During irradiation, the microstructure of U-7Mo evolves until at a fission density near 5x1021 f/cm3 a high-burnup microstructure exists that is very different than what was observed at lower fission densities. This microstructure is dominated by randomly distributed, relatively large, homogeneous fission gas bubbles. The bubble superlattice has collapsed in many microstructural regions, and the fuel grain sizes, in many areas, become sub-micron in diameter with both amorphous fuel and crystalline fuel present. 3-D reconstruction and microstructural characterization of neutron-irradiated U-10Zr fuel using FIB-SEM serial sectioning

Herein, focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy serial sectioning was applied to characterize the three-dimensional (3-D) porosity and phase regions of a neutron-irradiated U-10 wt% Zr fuel. The specimen was removed from an intermediate radial region of a fuel pin irradiated to 5.7 at.% burn-up. Backscattered electron imaging and energy-dispersive spectroscopy were performed on each serial section, allowing for the characterization of microstructural morphology and composition. SEM (scanning electron microscope) image analysis of grain growth in microwave-annealed alumina

An image analysis technique using a scanning electron microscope has been developed for accurately reconstructing grain boundaries to measure small changes in grain size and shape. The technique measures individual grain perimeters, areas, Feret's diameters, lengths, and widths, from which other parameters such as interface area per unit volume (S{sub v}), spherical grain diameter (D), aspect ratio, and shape factor, can be calculated.
