The primary objective of the project was to investigate and develop a novel process technology that can extract and concentrate rare earth elements (REE) from coal refuse material, namely shales and clays, to a concentration of greater than or equal to 2% by weight. The extraction and recovery technologies developed in this project leverage the low-cost ion-exchange leaching techniques that are currently applied for commercial heavy rare earth production in South China. In addition to the ion-exchange extraction technology, the project also investigated a novel method of solution concentration and recovery based on ion and/or precipitate flotation.

Acid mine leachate (AML) may be a significant source of rare earth and other critical elements needed for the manufacturing of advanced electronics and renewable energy technologies. Here, a systematic study was performed on a natural leachate collected from a coal preparation plant that treated bituminous coal containing elevated amounts of pyrite. The leachate contained 1.96 ppm total REEs, 2.52 ppm Zn, 2.15 ppm Ni, 1.22 ppm Cu, 0.77 ppm Co, and 25 ppm Mn. Rare-earth leaching from Florida phosphate rock in wet-process phosphoric acid production

Phosphorite, or phosphate rock, is the most significant secondary rare-earth resource. It contains high amounts of phosphate-bearing minerals along with low contents of rare earth elements (REEs). In Florida, about 19 Mt of phosphate rock are mined annually and most are used to manufacture fertilizers using a wet process, in which sulfuric acid reacts with phosphates to produce phosphoric acid and phosphogypsum.
