Phase transformations in ${Ln}_{2} O_{3}$ materials irradiated with swift heavy ions

Phase transformations induced in the cubic C-type lanthanide sesquioxides, Ln₂O₃ (Ln = Sm, Gd, Ho, Tm, and Lu), by dense electronic excitation are investigated. The structural modifications resulting from exposure to beams of 185 MeV Xe and 2246 MeV Au ions are characterized using synchrotron x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The formation of a B-type polymorph, an X-type nonequilibrium phase, and an amorphous phase are observed. The specific phase formed and the transformation rate show dependence on the material composition, as well as the ion beam mass and energy. Phase transformation pathways of ultrafast-laser-irradiated ${Ln}_{2} O_{3} (Ln = Er - Lu)$

Ultrafast laser irradiation causes intense electronic excitations in materials, leading to transient high temperatures and pressures. Here, we show that ultrafast laser irradiation drives an irreversible cubic-to-monoclinic phase transformation in Ln₂O₃ ( Ln = Er – Lu ) , and explore the mechanism by which the phase transformation occurs. A combination of grazing incidence x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy are used to determine the magnitude and depth-dependence of the phase transformation, respectively. The pyrochlore oxides (A{sub 2}B{sub 2}O{sub 7}) exhibit a remarkable range of structural, physical, and magnetic properties related to their various chemical compositions. This article reports the phase transformations induced by high electronic excitation in pyrochlores of the Gd{sub 2}(Zr{sub x}Ti{sub 1-x}){sub 2}O{sub 7} family irradiated with swift ions. The intense, highly localized electronic excitation resulting from swift heavy ion irradiation induces phase transformations in many materials, including the lanthanide sesquioxides (Ln₂O₃). To explore the effects of chemical composition on radiation-induced transformations, the structural responses of several related sesquioxides to swift heavy ion irradiation were compared.
