To study the mechanism of the spectral sensitization with the electrochemical cell + In/ZnO-single crystal/dye + electrolyte/Pt - measurements of the photocurrent influenced by salt additions to the electrolyte were performed. The ZnO-semiconductor-anode operates as a probe for excited states of dyes acting as sensitizer for the charge transfer through the interface zinc oxide/electrolyte. By addition of Br/sup -/, J/sup -/, SCN/sup -/, and SeCN/sup -/ ions to the dye-containing electrolyte a significant increase of the sensitized photocurrent was generated. The kinetics for interfacial electron transfer (ET) from a transparent conductive oxide (tin-doped indium oxide, ITO, Sn:In₂O₃) to molecular acceptors 4-[N,N-di(p-tolyl)amino]benzylphosphonic acid, TPA, and [Ru^II(bpy)₂(4,4' -(PO₃H₂)₂-bpy)]²⁺, RuP, positioned at variable distances within and beyond the electric double layer (EDL), were quantified in benzonitrile and methanol by nanosecond absorption spectroscopy as a function of the thermodynamic driving force, -ΔG ° . Relevant ET parameters such as the rate constant, k_et, reorganization energy, λ, and electronic coupling, Hab, were extracted from the kinetic data. Charge transfer at semiconductor/electrolyte interfaces is the critical process in photoelectrochemical systems. Many aspects of the theory for these interfaces have yet to be experimentally verified. There are few reliable measurements of the fundamental electron transfer rate at nonilluminated semiconductors. This situation stems from experimental limitations imposed by most semiconductor electrode surfaces. Layered metal dichalcogenide semiconductors have excellent properties as semiconductor electrodes, but edge sites and crystal defects must be masked so only the defect-free basal plane of the two-dimensional material is exposed to solution. Technical feasibility study of electrolytic ion transfer membranes for radioactive liquid waste processing

Results are presented of a test program designed to determine the technical feasibility of INNOVA Ion Transfer Membranes (ITM) to separate radionuclides from waste streams at N Reactor. The ITM system was tested using the following test solutions, which either chemically simulated or duplicated the radioactive waste streams generated at N Reactor: TURCO 4512A - /sup 59/Co, 4% Na/sub 2/So/sub 4/ - /sup 59/Fe, and Ion Exchange Resin Regeneration (IXR) waste from an irradiated fuel storage basin.
