Manipulating long-lived topological surface photovoltage in bulk-insulating topological insulators Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3

The appearance of topologically protected spin-momentum locked surface states in topological insulators gives rise to robust room temperature spin currents making them ideal candidates for the realization of spintronic devices. New methods are needed to access and manipulate such currents with timescales that are compatible with modern electronics. Here we reveal that an optically induced long-lived (~10 ns), spin-polarized surface state excitation in topological insulators can be easily tuned in both magnitude and duration. Time-resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, together with a quantitative model, reveals the ideal conditions for a surface photovoltage in two different topological insulators. Topological insulators are new states of quantum matter in which surface states residing in the bulk insulating gap of such systems are protected by time-reversal symmetry. Surface and substrate induced effects on thin films of the topological insulators Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3

Based on van der Waals density functional calculations, we have studied few-quintuple-layer (QL) films of Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3. The separation between the QLs near the surface is found to have a large increase after relaxation, whereas, the separation between the inner QLs is smaller and approaches the bulk value as the thickness grows, showing a two-dimensional to three-dimensional structural crossover. Accordingly, the surface Dirac cone of the Bi2Se3 film is evidently gapped for small thicknesses (two to four QLs), and the gap is reduced and, finally, is closed with the increasing thickness, agreeing well with the experiments.
