The reactive metal-support interaction in the Cu-In₂O₃ system and its implications on the CO₂ selectivity in methanol steam reforming (MSR) have been assessed using nanosized Cu particles on a powdered cubic In₂O₃ support. Reduction in hydrogen at 300 °C resulted in the formation of metallic Cu particles on In₂O₃. This system already represents a highly CO₂-selective MSR catalyst with ~93% selectivity, but only 56% methanol conversion and a maximum H₂ formation rate of 1.3 µmol gCu^-1 s^-1. After reduction at 400 °C, the system enters an In₂O₃-supported intermetallic compound state with Cu₂In as the majority phase. The adsorption of CO and the interaction of CO/sub ads/ with O/sub 2/ on Pd, Ce, and Pd-Ce//gamma/-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ (0.5 wt. % Pd, 2.0 wt. % Ce) has been studied using the methods of IR spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The identity of the adsorbed CO complexes, the temperature ranges over which they desorb, and their reactivity with O/sub 2/ have been established. The interaction of bridging and carbonate - carboxylate CO complexes and carbon (disproportionation and dissociation products) with O/sub 2/ on Pd and Pd-Ce catalysts is preceded by the coadsorption of oxygen and the evolution of heat.more »« less
Surface structures of In-Pd intermetallic compounds. I. Experimental study of In thin films on Pd(111) and alloy formation

A combination of experimental methods was used to study the structure of In thin films deposited on the Pd(111) surface and the alloying behavior. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), and scanning tunneling microscopy results indicate that surface alloying takes place at room temperature. Below 2 monolayer equivalents (MLEs), the LEED patterns show the formation of three rotational domains of InPd(110) of poor structural quality on top of the Pd(111) substrate.
