High-temperature decomposition of receiver field heat transfer fluids (HTFs) can cause hydrogen build-up in the receiver annulus of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) parabolic trough power plants. This build-up increases the receiver thermal losses and results in a decline in power output. Prior numerical work has shown that removal of hydrogen from the head space gas (HSG) in the plant expansion tanks can be an effective mitigation strategy. The main objective of this study was to calculate the uncertainty at 95% confidence for the experimental values of heat capacity of the eutectic mixture of biphenyl/diphenyl ether (Therminol VP-1) determined from 300 to 370 degrees C. Twenty-five samples were evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to obtain the sample heat flow as a function of temperature. The ASTM E-1269-05 standard was used to determine the heat capacity using DSC evaluations. High-pressure crucibles were employed to contain the sample in the liquid state without vaporizing. The thermal conductivities of biphenyl, phenyl ether, Dowtherm A, and Santowax R were measured. Errors due to convection, radiation, errors through axial heat flow, and temperature drop in walls of conductivity cell are discussed. The results were compiled in tables and also plotted.
