Title: Searching in CMS open data for dimuon resonances with substantial transverse momentum

Abstract

We study dimuon events in 2.11 fb - 1 of 7 TeV p p collisions, using CMS Open Data, and search for a narrow dimuon resonance with moderate mass (14–66 GeV) and substantial transverse momentum ( p T ). Applying dimuon p T cuts of 25 and 60 GeV, we explore two overlapping samples: one with isolated muons, and one with prompt muons without an isolation requirement. Using the latter sample requires information about detector effects and QCD backgrounds, which we obtain directly from the CMS Open Data. We present model-independent limits on the product of cross section, branching fraction, acceptance, and efficiencies. These limits are stronger, relative to a corresponding inclusive search without a p T cut, by factors of as much as 9. Our “ p T -enhanced” dimuon search strategy provides improved sensitivity to models in which a new particle is produced mainly in the decay of something heavier, as could occur, for example, in decays of the Higgs boson or of a TeV-scale top partner. An implementation of this method with the current 13 TeV data should improve the sensitivity to such signals further by roughly an order of magnitude.

We devise cuts to optimize the signals from stop and gluino pair production at LHC33. It is notoriously difficult to probe this scenario at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), because the slepton pair-production process yields a final state with soft leptons and small missing transverse energy. We study this scenario in the region of parameter space where the mass difference between the lightest neutralino and the lightest slepton ( <math> <mi mathvariant="normal"> Δ </mi><mi> m </mi> </math>) is <math> <mo> ≲ </mo><mn> 60 </mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi> GeV </mi> </math>, focusing on the process in which an additional radiated jet provides a transverse boost to the slepton pair. We then utilize the angular separation of the leptons from each other and from the missing transverse energy, as well as the angular separation between the jet and the missing transverse energy, to distinguish signal from background events. We also use the reconstructed ditau mass, the <math> <mi> cos </mi><msubsup> <mi> θ </mi> <mrow> <msub> <mo> ℓ </mo> <mn> 1 </mn> </msub> <msub> <mo> ℓ </mo> <mn> 2 </mn> </msub> </mrow> <mo> * </mo> </msubsup> </math> variable, and for larger <math> <mi mathvariant="normal"> Δ </mi><mi> m </mi> </math>, a lower bound on the lepton <math> <msub> <mi> p </mi> <mi> T </mi> </msub> </math>. These cuts can dramatically improve both signal sensitivity and the signal-to-background ratio, permitting discovery at the LHC with reasonable integrated luminosity over the interesting region of parameter space. Using our search strategy the LHC will be able to exclude <math> <msub> <mi> m </mi> <mover> <mi> μ </mi> <mo> ˜ </mo> </mover> </msub><mo> ≈ </mo><mn> 200 </mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi> GeV </mi> </math> for <math> <mi mathvariant="normal"> Δ </mi><mi> m </mi><mo> ≲ </mo><mn> 60 </mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi> GeV </mi> </math> at <math> <mrow> <mn> 1.5 </mn> <mi> – </mi> <mn> 3 </mn> <mi> σ </mi> </mrow> </math> with <math> <mrow> <mn> 1000 </mn> <mtext> </mtext> <mtext> </mtext> <msup> <mrow> <mi> fb </mi> </mrow> <mrow> <mo> - </mo> <mn> 1 </mn> </mrow> </msup> </mrow> </math> of integrated luminosity.
