XY antiferromagnetic ground state in the effective S=12 pyrochlore Yb2Ge2O7

Title: XY antiferromagnetic ground state in the effective $S = \frac{1}{2}$ pyrochlore ${Yb}_{2} {Ge}_{2} O_{7}$

Abstract

We report neutron scattering and muon spin relaxation measurements (μSR) on the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Yb₂Ge₂O₇. Inelastic neutron scattering was used to probe the transitions between crystal electric field levels, allowing us to determine the eigenvalues and eigenvectors appropriate to the J=$$\frac{7}{2}$$ Yb³⁺ ion in this environment. The crystal electric field ground state doublet in Yb₂Ge₂O₇ corresponds primarily to m_J=± $$\frac{1}{2}$$ with local XY anisotropy, consistent with an S_eff = 12 description for the Yb moments. $$μ$$SR measurements reveal the presence of an ordering transition at T_N=0.57 K with persistent weak dynamics in the ordered state. Finally, we present neutron diffraction measurements that reveal a clear phase transition to the $$k$$=(000)$$Γ_5$$ ground state with an ordered magnetic moment of 0.3(1)$$μ_B$$ per Yb ion. We compare and contrast this phenomenology with the low-temperature behavior of Yb₂Ti₂O₇ and Er₂Ti₂O₇, the prototypical S_eff= $$\frac{1}{2}$$ XY pyrochlore magnets.

The antiferromagnetic pyrochlore material NaCaCo₂F₇ is a thermal spin liquid over a broad temperature range (≈140 K down to T_F=2.4 K), in which magnetic correlations between Co²⁺ dipole moments explore a continuous manifold of antiferromagnetic XY states. The thermal spin liquid is interrupted by spin freezing at a temperature that is ~2% of the mean-field interaction strength, leading to short-range static XY clusters with distinctive relaxation dynamics. Crystal field excitations from ${Yb}^{3 +}$ ions at defective sites in highly stuffed ${Yb}_{2} {Ti}_{2} O_{7}$

The pyrochlore magnet Yb₂Ti₂O₇ has been proposed as a quantum spin ice candidate, a spin liquid state expected to display emergent quantum electrodynamics with gauge photons among its elementary excitations. However, Yb₂Ti₂O₇'s ground state is known to be very sensitive to its precise stoichiometry. Powder samples, produced by solid-state synthesis at relatively low temperatures, tend to be stoichiometric, while single crystals grown from the melt tend to display weak “stuffing” wherein ~2% of the Yb³⁺, normally at the A site of the A₂B₂O₇ pyrochlore structure, reside as well at the B site. We have performed magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, muon spin relaxation, and neutron-scattering measurements on three members of the family Ba₃MRu₂O₉, where M=In, Y, and Lu. These systems consist of mixed-valence Ru dimers on a triangular lattice with antiferromagnetic interdimer exchange. Although previous work has argued that charge order within the dimers or intradimer double exchange plays an important role in determining the magnetic properties, our results suggest that the dimers are better described as molecular units due to significant orbital hybridization, resulting in one spin-1/2 moment distributed equally over the two Ru sites. Solid-solutions of the "soft" quantum spin ice pyrochlore magnets Tb₂B₂O₇ with B=Ti and Sn display a novel magnetic ground state in the presence of strong B-site disorder, characterized by a low susceptibility and strong spin fluctuations to temperatures below 0.1 K. These materials have been studied using ac-susceptibility and muSR techniques to very low temperatures, and time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering techniques to 1.5 K. Neutron spectroscopic study of crystalline electric field excitations in stoichiometric and lightly stuffed ${Yb}_{2} {Ti}_{2} O_{7}$

Time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy has been used to determine the crystalline electric field Hamiltonian, eigenvalues and eigenvectors appropriate to the J=7/2 Yb³⁺ ion in the candidate quantum spin ice pyrochlore magnet Yb₂Ti₂O₇. The precise ground state of this exotic, geometrically frustrated magnet is known to be sensitive to weak disorder associated with the growth of single crystals from the melt. Such materials display weak “stuffing,” wherein a small proportion, approximately 2%, of the nonmagnetic Ti⁴⁺ sites are occupied by excess Yb³⁺.
