Title: Measurements of long-range near-side angular correlations in s N N =5 TeV proton-lead collisions in the forward region

Abstract

Two-particle angular correlations are studied in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energy of s N N =5 TeV , collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on data recorded in two beam configurations, in which either the direction of the proton or that of the lead ion is analysed. The correlations are measured in the laboratory system as a function of relative pseudorapidity, Δη, and relative azimuthal angle, Δφ, for events in different classes of event activity and for different bins of particle transverse momentum. In high-activity events a long-range correlation on the near side, Δφ≈0, is observed in the pseudorapidity range 2.0 < η < 4.9. This measurement of long-range correlations on the near side in proton-lead collisions extends previous observations into the forward region up to η=4.9. The correlation increases with growing event activity and is found to be more pronounced in the direction of the lead beam. However, the correlation in the direction of the lead and proton beams are found to be compatible when comparing events with similar absolute activity in the direction analysed.

abstractNote = {Two-particle angular correlations are studied in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energy of sNN=5 TeV, collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on data recorded in two beam configurations, in which either the direction of the proton or that of the lead ion is analysed. The correlations are measured in the laboratory system as a function of relative pseudorapidity, Δη, and relative azimuthal angle, Δφ, for events in different classes of event activity and for different bins of particle transverse momentum. In high-activity events a long-range correlation on the near side, Δφ≈0, is observed in the pseudorapidity range 2.0 < η < 4.9. This measurement of long-range correlations on the near side in proton-lead collisions extends previous observations into the forward region up to η=4.9. The correlation increases with growing event activity and is found to be more pronounced in the direction of the lead beam. However, the correlation in the direction of the lead and proton beams are found to be compatible when comparing events with similar absolute activity in the direction analysed.},

The measurements are performed using approximately 1 μb<sup>-1</sup> of data as a function of transverse momentum (p<sub>T</sub>) and the transverse energy (ΣE$$ Pb\atop{T} $$) summed over 3.1<η<4.9 in the direction of the Pb beam. The correlation function, constructed from charged particles, exhibits a long-range (2<|Δη|<5) "near-side" (Δ$$\phi$$~0) correlation that grows rapidly with increasing ΣE$$ Pb\atop{T} $$. A long-range "away-side" (Δ$$\phi$$~π) correlation, obtained by subtracting the expected contributions from recoiling dijets and other sources estimated using events with small ΣE$$ Pb\atop{T} $$, is found to match the near-side correlation in magnitude, shape (in Δη and Δ$$\phi$$) and ΣE$$ Pb\atop{T} $$ dependence. The measurements are performed in the central pseudorapidity region |η| < 0.8 and for the transverse momentum range 0.2 < pT < 5 GeV/c. The anisotropic flow is measured using two-particle correlations with a pseudorapidity gap greater than one unit and with the multiparticle cumulant method. Compared to results from Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV, the anisotropic flow coefficients v2, v3, and v4 are found to increase by (3.0±0.6)%, (4.3±1.4)%, and (10.2±3.8)%, respectively, in the centrality range 0%-50%. This increase can be attributed mostly to an increase of the average transverse momentum between the two energies. The measurements are found to be compatible with hydrodynamic model calculations. Within the current precision, the ratios of per-event D-meson yields in the ESE-selected and unbiased samples are found to be compatible with unity. For minimum bias <em>p</em>Pb collisions the maximum value of <em>dE<sub></sub></em>/<em>d</em>η is 22GeV, which implies an <em>E<sub></sub></em> per participant nucleon pair comparable to that of peripheral PbPb collisions at <math> <msqrt> <mi><msub> <mi> s </mi> <mn> NN </mn> </msub></mi> </msqrt> </math> =2.76eV. he increase of <em>dE<sub></sub></em>/<em>d</em>η with centrality is much stronger for the lead-going side than for the proton-going side. he η dependence of <em>dE<sub></sub></em>/<em>d</em>η is sensitive to the η range in which the centrality variable is defined.
