Title: Electroweak gauge boson parton distribution functions

Abstract

Transverse and longitudinal electroweak gauge boson parton distribution functions (PDFs) are calculated in terms of deep-inelastic scattering structure functions, following the recently developed method to determine the photon PDF. The calculation provides initial conditions at the electroweak scale for PDF evolution to higher energies. Numerical results for the W^± and Z transverse, longitudinal and polarized PDFs, as well as the γZ transverse and polarized PDFs are reported.

Measuring polarized parton distributions from electroweak interactions

We will try to review different methods based on electroweak interactions which can be used to extract polarized parton distributions. Our basic knowledge on parton distributions, coming from deep inelastic scattering in leptoproduction, will be reexamined and we will present a simple construction for unpolarized and polarized structure functions in terms of Fermi-Dirac distributions. We will also emphasize the importance of longitudinally and transversely polarized proton-proton and proton-neutron collisions at high energies for improving the determination of polarized quark distributions, in particular by means of gauge bosons and lepton-pair production. {copyright} {ital 1995 American Institute of Physics.}

Production of electroweak gauge bosons in off-shell gluon-gluon fusion

We study the production of electroweak gauge bosons at high energies in the framework of k{sub T}-factorization QCD approach. The amplitude for production of a single W{sup {+-}} or Z{sup 0} boson associated with quark pair in the fusion of two off-shell gluons is calculated. Contributions from the valence quarks are calculated using the quark-gluon interaction and quark-antiquark annihilation QCD subprocesses. The total and differential cross sections (as a function of the transverse momentum and rapidity) are presented and the ratio of cross sections for W{sup {+-}} and Z{sup 0} boson production is investigated. 3-, 4-, and 5-flavor next-to-next-to-leading order parton distribution functions from deep-inelastic-scattering data and at hadron colliders

We determine the parton distribution functions (PDFs) in a next-to-next-to-leading order QCD analysis of the inclusive neutral-current deep-inelastic-scattering (DIS) world data combined with the neutrino-nucleon DIS di-muon data and the fixed-target Drell-Yan data. The PDF evolution is performed in the N{sub f}=3 fixed-flavor scheme and supplementary sets of PDFs in the 4- and 5-flavor schemes are derived from the results in the 3-flavor scheme using matching conditions. The charm-quark DIS contribution is calculated in a general-mass variable-flavor-number (GMVFN) scheme interpolating between the zero-mass 4-flavor scheme at asymptotically large values of momentum transfer Q{sup 2} and the 3-flavor scheme prescription ofmore »« less

Electroweak radiative corrections to W boson production in hadronic collisions

The O({alpha}) electroweak radiative corrections to the process pp&barpar;{r_arrow}W{sup {plus_minus}}{r_arrow}scr(l){sup {plus_minus}}{nu} (scr(l)=e,{mu}) are calculated. The O({alpha}) corrections can be decomposed into separate gauge invariant contributions to the W boson production and decay processes. Factorizing the collinear singularity associated with initial state photon radiation into the parton distribution functions, we find that initial state corrections have a significantly smaller effect than final state radiative corrections. We study in detail the effect of electroweak radiative corrections on a number of interesting observables: the W transverse mass distribution, the W to Z transverse mass ratio, the charge asymmetry of leptons in W{r_arrow}scr(l){nu} decays,more »« less

High energy leptonic collisions and electroweak parton distribution functions

In high-energy leptonic collisions well above the electroweak scale, the collinear splitting mechanism of the electroweak gauge bosons becomes the dominant phenomena via the initial state radiation and the final state showering. We point out that at future high-energy lepton colliders, such as a multi-TeV muon collider, the electroweak parton distribution functions (EW PDFs) should be adopted as the proper description for partonic collisions of the initial states. The leptons and electroweak gauge bosons are the EW partons, that evolve according to the unbroken Standard Model (SM) gauge group and that effectively resum potentially large collinear logarithms.
