An extensive first-principles quasiharmonic phonon calculation was carried out for the thermoelectric material La_3-xTe₄ at the compositions of x = 0.0, 0.25 and 0.33, focusing at the La site vacancy effects on the thermodynamic properties. First-principles calculations of lattice dynamics and thermodynamic properties for Yb₁₄MnSb₁₁

Systematic first-principles calculations were performed to study the lattice dynamics of Yb₁₄MnSb₁₁ and hence to obtain a wide range of its thermodynamic properties at high temperatures. Here, the calculated results were analyzed in terms of the lattice contribution and the electronic contribution, together with a comparison with a collection of experimental thermochemical data. At 0 K, the electronic density of states showed the typical feature of a p-type semiconductor—a small amount of unoccupied electronic states exclusively made of the major spin by a range of ~0.6 eV above the Fermi energy. Phase diagram and thermodynamic properties of solid magnesium in the quasiharmonic approximation

Using a family of volume-dependent interatomic pair potentials derived from first principles, we calculate phonon properties and thermodynamic functions in the quasiharmonic approximation for the hcp and bcc phases of Mg over a wide range of volume and temperature. At atmospheric pressure, the calculated hcp phonon-dispersion curves and thermodynamic properties agree well with experiment. The pressure dependence of the Raman-active transverse-optical phonon mode also agrees well with very recent measurements. At high pressure, the temperature dependence of the hcp-bcc phase line is predicted, with values of the transition pressure ranging from 52 GPa at zero temperature to about 28 GPamore » at 1000 K.« less

Thermodynamic properties of solid sodium from quasiharmonic lattice dynamics and molecular dynamics

Quasiharmonic-lattice-dynamics and molecular-dynamics calculations were performed on metallic sodium from the low-temperature region to above melting at several different volumes. A pseudopotential model was used that consisted of a large volume-dependent potential plus a small effective two-body potential. From the molecular-dynamics results for the solid phase, we have constructed the Helmholtz free energy and calculated the thermodynamic properties up to the melting temperature. The anharmonic contributions to the internal energy and pressure are determined directly from molecular dynamics without using thermodynamic perturbation theory. Approximations for vibrational thermodynamics of disordered alloys: Effective supercells and the quasiharmonic method

Recent work has suggested that vibrational effects can play a significant role in determining alloy phase equilibria. In order to better understand these effects and the methods used in their calculation, the authors investigate the vibrational properties of disordered Ni{sub 3}Al using the Embedded-Atom Method. They examine the effectiveness of the Special Quasirandom Structure (SQS) approximation, and find that an SQS-8 can accurately represent the vibrational thermodynamics of the disordered state.
