We have successfully grown epitaxial CoFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} (CFO) thin film on SrTiO{sub 3} by metal organic chemical vapor deposition. In order to understand the surface structure and its correlation with magnetic properties, CFO thin films were deposited at a range of deposition temperatures. As the deposition temperature is decreased, a huge effect on film morphology and surface roughness is observed, resulting from a change in the size and density of the crystal nuclei. Seven new members of the misfit layer family with the general formula LnNb[sub 2]S[sub 5]'' (Ln = La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Er and also Y) have been prepared and studied by X-ray powder diffraction. Electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility were measured. All materials are metals and none of them is superconducting. They show very different magnetic behavior which is mainly determined by the rare earth element in the structure.
