Cost Modelling for Energy Efficient Window Replacements

This paper detailed data collection and cost-modeling efforts to understand the hardware and non-hardware (soft) cost of residential, energy efficient window replacements. NREL created a bottom-up cost model that details costs associated with window materials, installation labor, company overhead, and administrative costs. NREL did not find a single cost area for improvement but observed several non-cost barriers to increased window replacements. The non-cost barriers associated with window replacements are consumer education, lack of communication of the value of window replacement to consumers, and difficulty for consumers to identify quality products and installation.

Proof-of-principle gas-reservoir MnNiMg electrochromic mirror devices have been investigated. In contrast to conventional electrochromic approaches, hydrogen is stored (at low concentration) in the gas volume between glass panes of the insulated glass units (IGUs). The elimination of a solid state ion storage layer simplifies the layer stack, enhances overall transmission, and reduces cost. The cyclic switching properties were demonstrated and system durability improved with the incorporation a thin Zr barrier layer between the MnNiMg layer and the Pd catalyst. We have mounted 1 {mu}m thick aluminized polyimide windows onto the position sensitive proportional counters employed by the wide-band flat crystal spectrometers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory electron beam ion trap experiment. The aluminized polyimide, supported by thin wires across the short axis of the window, is used to isolate the detection chamber of the proportional counters, which operate at a pressure of 760 Torr, from the vacuum chamber of the spectrometer.
