The Interaction of Carbon Monoxide with Rhodium on Potassium-Modified CeO ₂(111)

The adsorption and reactions of CO adsorbed on Rh particles deposited on K-covered CeO ₂(111) were studied by temperature programmed desorption and photoelectron spectroscopy. K deposited on CeO ₂(111) forms a KO _X over-layer by extracting O from the ceria and partially reducing some of the Ce ⁴⁺ to Ce ³⁺. CO does not adsorb on the KO _X / CeO _2-X(111) surface in the absence of Rh particles. CO adsorbed on Rh / K / CeO ₂(111) adsorbs molecularly on the Rh at 200 K. Ambient-Pressure XPS Studies of Reactions of Alcohols on SrTiO ₃(100)

Ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS) and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) have been employed to elucidate the adsorption and reaction of simple alcohols on SrTiO ₃(100). TPD experiments indicate molecular desorption of alcohols with a small amount of aldehydes below 100 °C, whereas no gas-phase products are observed above this temperature. APXPS spectra at 0.1 Torr show that alcohols adsorb dissociatively onto SrTiO ₃(100) to form alkoxies. Surface methoxides appear to react with each other to produce acetate as a surface intermediate. Below-Room-Temperature C–H Bond Breaking on an Inexpensive Metal Oxide: Methanol to Formaldehyde on CeO ₂ (111)

C-H bond breaking is important for industrial commodity and specialty chemical transformations, including the upgrading of alcohols. Small primary alcohols – methanol and ethanol – are used industrially as precursors for the corresponding aldehydes at industrial scales. However, upgrading these primary alcohols involves C-H bond breaking and the processes are run at elevated temperatures (> 200 °C).
