Microstructure evolution in a melt-spun amorphous Fe{sub 77.2}Mo{sub 0.8}Si{sub 9}B{sub 13} alloy subjected to high-energy ball milling was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), a transmission electron microscope (TEM), and a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). It was found that during ball milling, crystallization occurs in the amorphous ribbon sample with precipitation of an {alpha}-Fe solid solution, and the amorphous sample crystallizes completely into a single {alpha}-Fe nanostructure (rather than {alpha}-Fe and borides as in the usual thermal crystallization products) when the milling time exceeds 135 hours. Ball Milling-Enabled Fe^2.4+ to Fe³⁺ Redox Reaction in Prussian Blue Materials for Long-Life Aqueous Sodium-Ion Batteries

Aqueous Na-ion batteries using Prussian blue materials have inherent advantages on safety, material sustainability, and economic cost. However, it is challenging to obtain long term cycling stability because many redox reactions have poor intrinsic stability in water. In this report we demonstrate reversible Fe^2.4+ to Fe³⁺ redox reaction of Prussian blue electrodes cycled in 17 m NaClO₄ water-in-salt electrolyte. The cubic phase c-Na_1.17Fe[Fe(CN)₆]·0.35H₂O) derived from monoclinic Prussian blue (m-Na_1.88Fe[Fe(CN)₆]·0.7H₂O) through ball milling delivers excellent cycling stability of >18,000 cycles with >90% capacity retention at 10C rate. This paper reports that studies have demonstrated that a wide range of commercially important high melting point intermetallics (eg. carbides, silicides, and nitrides) can be synthesized by mechanical alloying However, the fundamentals of the transformation of a simple mixture of starting constituents to the end milling product remain largely unexplored.
