Here, we present global two-fluid simulations of L-mode edge tokamak plasma turbulence and profile evolution including both closed field lines and the scrape-off-layer. We consider a shifted-circle magnetic configuration with realistic Alcator C-Mod inner wall limited discharge parameters. The dominant driver of turbulence in the simulations is the resistive ballooning mode. We observe spontaneous E × B rotation in the electron diamagnetic drift direction in the closed flux region in all cases. GDB: A global 3D two-fluid model of plasma turbulence and transport in the tokamak edge

Here, the global drift-ballooning (GDB) code is developed to study tokamak edge low frequency turbulence and transport, and their relationship to global profile evolution. The code employs a 3D electromagnetic fluid model that does not discriminate between equilibrium and perturbative contributions, capturing arbitrary amplitude fluctuations. Primitive plasma variables, including the flow profiles, are evolved self-consistently in both closed-flux surfaces and the scrape-off-layer (SOL). A suite of numerical techniques described here handle the linear and non-linear components of the model efficiently so as to support realistic discharge parameters (such as realistic deuterium mass ratio √m_i/m_e ≈ 60) and yield good scalingmore »« less

Global 3D Braginskii simulations of the tokamak edge region of IWL discharges

A study of plasma turbulence and profile evolution in conditions of low (L-mode) and high (H-mode) confinement at the edge of an axisymmetric, nested circular flux-surface approximation to an inner wall limited (IWL) Alcator C-Mod discharge is presented, using numerical simulations with the global drift-ballooning (GDB) code. GDB solves drift-reduced Braginskii two-fluid equations for electromagnetic low-frequency turbulence in a 3D annulus centered on the last closed flux-surface (LCFS). Three simulations that investigate the conditions of a reference L-mode, a high density, and a high temperature (or H-mode-like) shot were performed using realistic parameters. L-mode transport appears to be largely driven by drift resistive ballooning structures. Its pressure profile exhibits a near-SOL breakpoint that Mirror Langmuir Probes (MLP) detect in C-Mod. Fluid theory and simulations of instabilities, turbulent transport and coherent structures in partially-magnetized plasmas of E x B discharges

Partially-magnetized plasmas with magnetized electrons and non-magnetized ions are common in Hall thrusters for electric propulsion and magnetron material processing devices. These plasmas are usually in strongly non-equilibrium state due to presence of crossed electric and magnetic fields, inhomogeneities of plasma density, temperature, magnetic field and beams of accelerated ions. Free energy from these sources make such plasmas prone to various instabilities resulting in turbulence, anomalous transport, and appearance of coherent structures as found in experiments.
