Relations between spatial correlations of rich clusters of galaxies

We express the N-point rich cluster correlation function in terms of the two-point rich cluster correlation function in a model where rich clusters formed wherever suitably averaged primordial energy density fluctuations are unusually large. The validity of our results is not restricted to regions where the connected (reduced) N-point correlation functions are small compared with unity.

We have searched for compact stellar structures within 17 tidal tails in 13 different interacting galaxies using F606W- and F814W-band images from the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 on the Hubble Space Telescope. The sample of tidal tails includes a diverse population of optical properties, merging galaxy mass ratios, H I content, and ages. Combining our tail sample with Knierman et al., we find evidence of star clusters formed in situ with M{sub V} < -8.5 and V - I < 2.0 in 10 of 23 tidal tails; we are able to identify cluster candidates to M{sub V} = -6.5more »« less

A spatial characterization of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy tidal tails

We measure the spatial density of F turnoff stars in the Sagittarius dwarf tidal stream, from Sloan Digital Sky Survey data, using statistical photometric parallax. We find a set of continuous, consistent parameters that describe the leading Sgr stream's position, direction, and width for 15 stripes in the north Galactic cap, and three stripes in the south Galactic cap. We produce a catalog of stars that has the density characteristics of the dominant leading Sgr tidal stream that can be compared with simulations. Head-tail radio sources in clusters of galaxies

New observations are presented of six head-tail radio galaxies, five of which are previously unreported in the literature. Total intensity maps at 2695 MHz and optical identifications are presented. Some physical parameters of these sources are derived, and are found to be similar to those of the other known head-tail sources. For the 14 head-tail sources mapped to data, we find no pattern in the orientation of the tails with respect to the optical cluster centers.
