Two-dimensional imaging of parallel ion velocities are compared to fluid modeling simulations to understand the role of ions in determining divertor conditions and benchmark the UEDGE fluid modeling code. Pure helium discharges are used so that spectroscopic He+measurements represent the main-ion population at small electron temperatures. Electron temperatures and densities in the divertor match simulated values to within about 20-30% establishing the experiment/model match as being at least as good as those normally obtained in the more regularly simulated deuterium plasmas. Validation of EDGDE2D-EIRENE predicted 2D distributions of electron temperature and density against divertor Thomson scattering measurements in the low-field side divertor leg in DIII-D

Comparisons of profiles of the electron temperature (T_e), density (n_e) and pressure (p_e) measured with Divertor Thomson Scattering in DIII-D low-confinement mode discharges to predictions from the edge fluid code EDGE2D-EIRENE show that the models implemented in EDGE2D-EIRENE predict the measurements within their collective uncertainties if the T_e at the separatrix (T_e,sep) is 10 eV, or higher. Impurity ion flow and temperature measured in a detached divertor with externally applied non-axisymmetric fields on $$\mathrm{DIII}$$-$$\mathrm{D}$$

In this study, externally applied non-axisymmetric magnetic fields are shown to have little effect on the impurity ion flow velocity and temperature as measured by the multichord divertor spectrometer in the DIII-D divertor for both attached and detached conditions. These experiments were performed in H-mode plasmas with the grad-B drift toward the target plates, with and without n = 3 resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs). The flow velocity in the divertor is shown to change by as much as 30% when deuterium gas puffing is used to create detachment of the divertor plasma. Dynamic measurement of impurity ion transport in runaway electron plateaus in DIII-D

In this work, the first dynamic (time-dependent) measurements of impurity ion radial (cross field) and parallel (along-field) diffusion coefficients for post-disruption runaway electron plateaus are presented. Small (~1 mm diameter) carbon or silicon pellets are fired into the edge of steady-state runaway electron (RE) plateaus, and the resulting radial and toroidal transport of singly charged impurity ions (C⁺ or Si⁺) is monitored with spatially distributed visible spectrometers. Consistent with previous steady-state particle balance estimates of Ar⁺ radial transport, radial (cross field) diffusion coefficients D_⟂ ≈ 2–5 m²/s are obtained, about 10× larger than expected from neo-classical theory.
