A search is made for discrete subgroups of SU(2) and SU(3) for which the phase transition occurs beyond the region of physical interest. For SU(2) two subgroups are found that have a transition beyond this region. One of these, the double icosahedral group (anti I), agrees with the group SU(2) well into the asymptotic weak coupling region. No discrete subgroups suitable for approximating the group SU(3) are found to exist. Skein theory and topological quantum registers: Braiding matrices and topological entanglement entropy of non-Abelian quantum Hall states

We study topological properties of quasi-particle states in the non-Abelian quantum Hall states. We apply a skein-theoretic method to the Read-Rezayi state whose effective theory is the SU(2){sub K} Chern-Simons theory. As a generalization of the Pfaffian (K = 2) and the Fibonacci (K = 3) anyon states, we compute the braiding matrices of quasi-particle states with arbitrary spins. Furthermore we propose a method to compute the entanglement entropy skein-theoretically. We find that the entanglement entropy has a nontrivial contribution called the topological entanglement entropy which depends on the quantum dimension of non-Abelian quasi-particle intertwining two subsystems.

Abelianization of non-Abelian lattice gauge theories

(2+1)-dimensional pure SU(2) lattice gauge theory on a square lattice is shown to be exactly equivalent to an Abelian gauge theory on a Kagome lattice. The new dynamical variables create or annihilate a unit of an additive, color-invariant electric flux. They provide a complete (and not overcomplete) basis for physical states in the form of nonoriented allowed'' closed loops of unit flux. This also establishes 't Hooft's conjecture that a gauge theory of the Abelian subgroup is relevant for the confinement mechanism.

Cold Atoms in Non-Abelian Gauge Potentials: From the Hofstadter Moth to Lattice Gauge Theory

We demonstrate how to create artificial external non-Abelian gauge potentials acting on cold atoms in optical lattices. The method employs atoms with k internal states, and laser assisted state sensitive tunneling, described by unitary kxk matrices. The single-particle dynamics in the case of intense U(2) vector potentials lead to a generalized Hofstadter butterfly spectrum which shows a complex mothlike structure. We discuss the possibility to realize non-Abelian interferometry (Aharonov-Bohm effect) and to study many-body dynamics of ultracold matter in external lattice gauge fields.

Phase diagram and spectrum of gauge-fixed Abelian lattice gauge theory

We consider a lattice discretization of a covariantly gauge-fixed Abelian gauge theory. The gauge fixing is part of the action defining the theory, and we study the phase diagram in detail. As there is no BRST symmetry on the lattice, counterterms are needed, and we construct those explicitly. We show that the proper adjustment of these counterterms drives the theory to a new type of phase transition, at which we recover a continuum theory of (free) photons.
