Differential responses of plant foliage to simulated acid rain

Experiments were performed to show the responses of foliage of several clones of Tradescantia sp., Pteridium aquilinum, Quercus palustris, and Glycine max to simulated acid rain. These experiments were performed to (a) predict the relative sensitivities of foliage of these plants to acid rain, and (b) identify leaf surface and anatomical alterations to simulated acid rain that may be used to diagnose acid rain injury. Plants were exposed to simulated rain at pH levels of 5.7, 3.4, 3.1, 2.9, 2.7, 2.5, and 2.3.

Foliar Responses that may Determine Plant Injury by Simulated Acid Rain

The aim of the research presented here is to try to use visual, scanning electron micrographs, and histological preparations as tools to predict the relative sensitivity of various plant species to simulated acid rain. It is hoped that these results might enable a prediction of the relative sensitivities of major plant groups of economic and aesthetic interest to air pollutants.

Experiments were carried out and chemical aspects of ambient precipitation were determined using a sequential precipitation collector for the period July 1976 through September 1977. A related report provides experimental details. Effects of simulated acid rain on growth and yield of soybeans and pinto beans

In order to assess the degree of damage that acid rain has or might have on plants, experiments were performed to determine the change in seed yield of two agronomic crops, soybeans and pinto beans, after exposure to simulated rain of pH 5.7, 3.1, 2.9, 2.7, and 2.5. Moreover, the effects of simulated acid rain were determined on a variety of other experimental parameters to understand further how plants respond to this environmental stress.
