The type of response the steppe grass Agropyron smithii Rydb. exhibits to mycorrhizal fungi is dependent upon where along the resource gradient the experiment is conducted. At the lower end of a soil-phosphorus (P) gradient (2 {mu}g P g{sup {minus}1} soil) mycorrhizal A. smithii biomass was 35% greater than its nonmycorrhizal counterpart; while at the high end of the gradient (20 {mu}g P g{sup {minus}1} soil) no difference in host biomass production was evident. Effect of soil dilution on the growth and response of Agropyron smithii to mutualistic association with Glomus mosseae/monosporum

A significant soil dilution and inoculation response was found for growth and morphology characteristics after 10 weeks growth. The response to inoculation for most growth parameters was positive. Root to shoot ratios for mycorrhizal plants were closer to 1 than nonmycorrhizal plants. Mycorrhizal plants also produced greater biomass, leaf surface area and root length. The major finding was a growth strategy change for mycorrhizal plants where an increase in tiller production occurred at all P levels. 2 figures. (MF)
Effect of endomycorrhizae on interactions between mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal plants. [Glomus monosporum/mosseae; Atriplex canescens; Sitanion hystrix]

An investigation on how infection with vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (VAM) changes interactions between plants was initiated. Specifically addressed were how does the presence or absence of VAM affect: (1) a species that typically shows little or no infection; and (2) a species that typically possesses moderate levels of infection. Results show: roots for inoculated species were higher than uninoculated treatments; the above ground dry weight gain were significantly higher with inoculation. The growth response of both species suggests a fungus-to-plant interaction even though infection, as measured by arbuscules a vesicles, was not always present. 2 figures. (MF)
Bacterial physiological diversity in the rhizosphere of range plants in response to retorted shale stress. [Agropyron smithii Rydb; Atriplex canescens (Pursh) Nutt]

Bacterial populations were isolated from the soil-root interface and root-free regions of Agropyron smithii Rydb. and Atriplex canescens (Pursh) Nutt. grown in soil, retorted shale, or soil over shale. Bacteria isolated from retorted shale exhibited a wider range of tolerance to alkalinity and salinity and decreased growth on amino acid substrates compared with bacteria from soil and soil-over-shale environments. Exoenzyme production was only slightly affected by growth medium treatment. Sulfur was determined in plants and lichens by combustion of the sample and infrared detection of evolved sulfur dioxide using an automated sulfur analyzer. Vanadium pentaoxide was used as a combustion accelerator. Pelletization of the sample prior to combustion was not found to be advantageous. Washing studies showed that leaching of sulfur was not a major factor in the sample preparation. The combustion-IR analysis usually gave higher sulfur content than the turbidimetric analysis as well as shorter analysis time.
