To help evaluate root distribution patterns, elongation rates of individual roots were measured as a function of soil temperature for Encelia farinosa (a C{sub 3} species), Pleuraphis rigida (C{sub 4}), and Agave deserti (CAM), sympatric codominants in the northwestern Donoran Desert. A daily course of photosynthesis and carbohydrate (glucose, fructose, sucrose, and starch) content was determined for Encelia farinosa, a common shrub in arid regions of southwestern United States, grown under 370 {mu}l 1{sup {minus}1} CO{sub 2} concentrations. Changes in photosynthesis (A) and carbohydrate partitioning were studied for Encelia farinosa, a common C{sub 3} desert shrub in the southwestern United States, after a 3-month exposure to the current or a doubled CO{sub 2} concentration (750 {mu}L L{sup -1}). Laboratory experiments were performed to evaluate observed seasonal changes in leaf morphology of the desert perennial shrub, Encelia farinosa Gray. Plants were grown under low or high conditions of photosynthetically active irradiation, soil water potential (Psi/sup soil/), and leaf temperature (8 different experimental regimes). The relative growth rate, leaf water vapor conductance, leaf water potential, and leaf length were all greater for the high Psi/sup soil/ regimes, the largest leaves occurring at low irradiation. Several of the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), i.e. the dioxin-like PCBs, are known to induce the P450 enzymes CYP1A1, CYP1A2 and CYP1B1 by activating the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (Ah)-receptor. We evaluated if circulating levels of PCBs in a population sample were related to genetic variation in the genes encoding these CYPs. In the population-based Prospective Investigation of the Vasculature in Uppsala Seniors (PIVUS) study (1016 subjects all aged 70), 21 SNPs in the CYP1A1, CYP1A2 and CYP1B1 genes were genotyped.
