A study was conducted in a house in Polk County, Florida, to determine the effects of normal home ventilation methods on radon, radon progeny, and working levels. Three ventilation conditions were studied which approximate those found during normal occupancy. The effects of the central air conditioner, the central blower without air conditioning, and outside air ventilation were studied, with radon, radon progeny, and working level measurements made sequentially until significant changes ceased to be observed. In all three experiments, radon, radon progeny, and working levels decreased, with the decreases corresponding to estimated increases in house ventilation rate.

This study evaluates an original radon mitigation technique which uses solar-heated ventilation air to reduce radon and other indoor air pollutants. Providing energy-efficient make-up air for combustion appliances and stack effect losses, the Solar Radon Reduction System (SRRS) improves indoor air quality through dilution, slight pressurization, and reduced radon infiltration. Solar heating of intake air produces net energy gain in cold seasons, and the SRRS blower provides summertime cooling during low outdoor temperatures. Although radon exposure has been identified as the second leading cause of lung cancer, fewer than 6% of US homeowners test their homes for radon. This report examines participants' follow-up radon testing behavior subsequent to receiving an initial screening radon level greater than 20 pCi/L. A compilation of data from earlier studies of 172 homes in the Pacific Northwest indicated that approximately 65 percent of the 46 homes tested in the Spokane River Valley/Rathdrum Prairie region of eastern Washington/northern Idaho had heating season indoor radon ({sup 222}Rn) concentrations above the U.S. EPA guideline of 148 Bq m{sup {minus}3} (4 pCi L{sup {minus}1}). Radon testing in Arkansas homes

This paper reports on 262 homes in Arkansas tested for radon concentrations during 1989. The sub-group drawn from areas thought to have elevated levels of radon gas in the soil consisted of 199 homes. The remaining 63 residences were drawn from counties where the levels of radon within the soil gas are not believed to be high. Also included within the overall sample are results from measurements performed on about 20 underground or earthen houses.
