The β-decay half-lives of 94 neutron-rich nuclei ^{144more » $$-$$ 151}Cs, ^{146 $$-$$ 154}Ba, ^{148 $$-$$ 156}La, 1^{50 $$-$$ 158}Ce, ^{153 $$-$$160}Pr, 156 $$-$$ 162 Nd, ^{159 $$-$$ 163}Pm, ^{160 $$-$$ 166}Sm, ^{161 $$-$$ 168}Eu , ^{165 $$-$$ 170}Gd, ^{166 $$-$$ 172}Tb, ^{169 $$-$$ 173}Dy, ^{172 $$-$$ 175}Ho, and two isomeric states ^{174 m}Er, ^{172 m}Dy were measured at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory, providing a new experimental basis to test theoretical models. Strikingly large drops of β -decay half-lives are observed at neutron-number N = 97 for ₅₈Ce, ₅₉Pr, ₆₀Nd , and ₆₂Sm, and N = 105 for ₆₃Eu, ₆₄Gd, ₆₅Tb, and ₆₆Dy. Features in the data mirror the interplay between pairing effects and microscopic structure. In conclusion, $$r$$-process network calculations performed for a range of mass models and astrophysical conditions show that the 57 half-lives measured for the first time play an important role in shaping the abundance pattern of rare-earth elements in the solar system.« less

Precision mass measurements of neutron-rich neodymium and samarium isotopes and their role in understanding rare-earth peak formation

The Canadian Penning Trap mass spectrometer at the Californium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) facility was used to measure the masses of eight neutron-rich isotopes of Nd and Sm. These measurements are the first to push into the region of nuclear masses relevant to the formation of the rare-earth abundance peak at A ~ 165 by the rapid neutron-capture process. We compare our results with theoretical predictions obtained from “reverse engineering” the mass surface that best reproduces the observed solar abundances in this region through a Markov chain Monte Carlo technique. Mass measurements of neutron-rich gallium isotopes refine production of nuclei of the first $r$ -process abundance peak in neutron-star merger calculations

We report mass measurements of neutron-rich Ga isotopes ^80–85Ga with TRIUMF's Ion Trap for Atomic and Nuclear science. The measurements determine the masses of ^80–83Ga in good agreement with previous measurements. Here, the masses of ⁸⁴Ga and ⁸⁵Ga were measured for the first time. Uncertainties between 25 and 48 keV were reached. The new mass values reduce the nuclear uncertainties associated with the production of A ≈ 84 isotopes by the r-process for astrophysical conditions that might be consistent with a binary neutron star (BNS) merger producing a blue kilonova. Exploring the mass surface near the rare-earth abundance peak via precision mass measurements at JYFLTRAP

The JYFLTRAP double Penning trap at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility has been used to measure the atomic masses of 13 neutron-rich rare-earth isotopes. Eight of the nuclides, ¹⁶¹Pm, ¹⁶³Sm, ^164,165Eu, ¹⁶⁷Gd, and ^165,167,168Tb, were measured for the first time. The systematics of the mass surface has been studied via one- and two-neutron separation energies as well as neutron pairing-gap and shell-gap energies.
