Abstract

A liquid scintillation counter with an active volume 3.05m×0.20m×0.20m was constructed with a simple, inexpensive, and rugged design. Some properties of this counter are reported.

Toluene and other solvents used in liquid scintillation counters have traditionally caused problems in packaging. These problems led to the development of silicone oil as a scintillation liquid at this laboratory, and the subsequent development of a large cylindrical scintillation counter. The use of silicone oil allows cast acrylics (e.g..,Lucite, Plexiglas) as packaging substances. Such plastics are advantageous because they are easy to work, are relatively inexpensive, and have indices of refraction close to that of silicone oil.

The design and operating characteristics of a 2 pi large volume liquid scintillation counter are described. The counter is used for measuring natural and tracer amounts of added radioactivity in people, animals, and large samples. The detector tank, containing more than 90 gal of scintillator solution, is mounted in a horizontal position and is shielded by 6 in. of steel. The tank has a semicircular center well in which the samples are placed. This well is 72 in. long and has a 20 in. diameter. A new and greatly improved liquid scintillation counter, constructed for the Second Conference on Peaccful Uses of Atomic Energy at Geneva, is described. Natural potassium activity of the human body can be measured to a precision of 3 per cent in 100 seconds of counting time, and the sensitivity for extraneous gamma activity is better than 0.00l mu c. In a systematic study of the performance of large scintillators, a container in the form of a rectangular parallelepiped with the larger surface st run.
