The authors have used x-ray absorption to measure the binding energy, x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), and extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) of Pt particles in L-zeolite saturated with H{sub 2} at room temperature and after desorption of H{sub 2} in He. The desorption of H{sub 2} causes the particles to disorder or perhaps breakup such that the coherence required for EXAFS is lost. The shift (with respect to bulk metal) of the binding energy of the Pt in the zeolite, not stabilized by chemisorbed H{sub 2}, suggests an interaction with the zeolite support (and may reflect electronic chargemore » transfer to the Pt).« less

We report the L_3,2-edge whiteline anomaly observed in PtAu nanowire, PtAu and Pt nanoparticles deposited on Si nanowire, and their comparison with that of Pt metal. It is found that charge redistribution upon the formation of these materials can indeed be tracked with the L_3,2 whiteline intensity. The implications of these findings are discussed.

The Atomic Structural Dynamics of γ-Al₂O₃ Supported Ir–Pt Nanocluster Catalysts Prepared from a Bimetallic Molecular Precursor: A Study Using Aberration-Corrected Electron Microscopy and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

This study describes a prototypical, bimetallic heterogeneous catalyst: compositionally well-defined Ir–Pt nanoclusters with sizes in the range of 1–2 nm supported on γ-Al₂O₃. Deposition of the molecular bimetallic cluster [Ir₃Pt₃(μ-CO)₃(CO)₃(η-C₅Me₅)₃] on γ-Al₂O₃, and its subsequent reduction with hydrogen, provides highly dispersed supported bimetallic Ir–Pt nanoparticles. Using spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (Cs-STEM) and theoretical modeling of synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements, our studies provide unambiguous structural assignments for this model catalytic system. The atomic resolution Cs-STEM images reveal strong and specific lattice-directed strains in the clusters that follow local bonding configurations of the γ-Al₂O₃ support. Surface oxidation of a Pt--20% CO alloy: An x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and low-energy electron diffraction study on the (100) and (111) oriented single-crystal surfaces

The interaction of oxygen with the surface of a Pt alloy containing approx.20 at. % of cobalt was studied by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). At this composition, cobalt was found to be randomly substituted in the Pt fcc lattice both in the bulk and at the surface. (111) and 100) oriented single-crystal surfaces as well as polycrystalline surfaces were studied. Dosing these surfaces with oxygen at room temperature at pressures lower than approx.1 x 10/sup -5/ Torr resulted in the formation of a chemisorbed oxygen layer.
