Semiconductor Bloch equations, in their extension including the spin degree of freedom of the carriers, are capable to describe spin dynamics on a microscopic level. In the presence of free holes, electron spins can flip simultaneously with hole spins due to electron-hole exchange interaction. This mechanism named after Bir, Aronov, and Pikus is described here by using the extended semiconductor Bloch equations [Phys. Status Solidi B 234, 385 (2002)] and considering carrier-carrier interaction beyond the Hartree-Fock truncation. As a result we derive microscopic expressions for spin-relaxation and spin-dephasing rates.

Microscopic and hydrodynamic theory of superfluidity in periodic solids

The microscopic theory of fourth sound and of the superfluid fraction for perfect one-component periodic solids has been derived. It is applicable to finite temperatures and is restricted to the case of well-defined excitations. One finds that the superfluid fraction is a tensor rho/sub s//sub b//sub ..beta..//rho/sub 0/ and that the fourth-sound velocity C/sub 4/ is a tensor (C/sup 2//sub 4/)/sub b//sub ..beta../ = (partialrho/sub 0//partial..mu../sub 0/)/sup -1/rho/sub s//sub b//sub ..beta../, where ..mu../sub 0/ and rho/sub 0/ are the spatially averaged values of the chemical potential (per unit mass) and of the number density. Electron spin resonance study of the local properties of the microscopic phase separation in La{sub 1-x}Ca{sub x}MnO{sub 3} single-crystal films

Electron spin resonance is studied in films of La{sub 1-x}Ca{sub x}MnO{sub 3} manganites with compositions in the vicinity of the calcium content x = 0.5, in which the phase separation is most clearly pronounced. It is found that the La{sub 0.5}Ca{sub 0.5}MnO{sub 3} manganite undergoes different types of phase separation: (i) at temperatures above the Curie point, ferromagnetic regions exist in the paramagnetic phase; and (ii) at temperatures below the Neel point, antiferromagnetic microregions coexist with ferromagnetic microregions. Two types of ferromagnetic domains with different magnetization orientations are revealed In the temperature range between the Curie and Neel points.

NMR Study of the New Magnetic Superconductor CaK(Fe_0:951Ni0:049)₄As₄: Microscopic Coexistence of Hedgehog Spin-vortex Crystal and Superconductivity

Coexistence of a new-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) state, the so-called hedgehog spin-vortex crystal (SVC), and superconductivity (SC) is evidenced by ⁷⁵As nuclear magnetic resonance study on single-crystalline CaK(Fe_0:951Ni0:049)₄As₄. The hedgehog SVC order is clearly demonstrated by the direct observation of the internal magnetic induction along the c axis at the As1 site (close to K) and a zero net internal magnetic induction at the As2 site (close to Ca) below an AFM ordering temperature T_N ~ 52 K. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T₁ shows a distinct decrease below T_c ~ 10 K, providing also unambiguous evidence for the microscopic coexistence.more »« less
