In this report, we present a contrast variation small angle neutron scattering (SANS) study of PS-b-P(S-g-PEO) block graft copolymers in aqueous media at a concentration of 10 mg/ml. Through varying the solvent D2O/H2O ratio, the scattering contributions from the water molecules and the micellar constituent components can be determined. Based on the commonly used core-shell model, a theoretical coherent scattering cross section incorporating the effect of water penetration is developed and used to analyze the SANS I(Q), we have successfully quantified the micellar structure and the number of - water molecules associated with the core and corona. In this work a gold nanoparticle (NP) hydrogel composite prepared by multi-step cascade synthesis undergoes temperature, pH, and solvent dependent nanoscale structural transformations promoting modulation of the plasmon resonance. The composite is spontaneously prepared from a non-covalent lamellar structured lyotropic mesophase (complex fluid) composed of amphiphiles (DMPC and Triton X-100) that support the reactive constituents, a mixture of hydroxyl and acrylate end-derivatized Tetronic (Poloxamine) polymer and [AuCl4]^–. Here, template-free directed self-assembly of ultrathin (~10’s nm) lamellar block copolymer (l-BCP) films of high-interfacial area into vertically oriented nanodomains holds much technological relevance for fabrication of next-generation devices from nanoelectronics to nanomembranes due to domain interconnectivity and high interfacial area.
