Title: Experimental study of the rearrangements of valence protons and neutrons amongst single-particle orbits during double- $β$ decay in ${}^{100}{Mo}$

Abstract

The rearrangements of protons and neutrons amongst the valence single-particle orbitals during double-beta decay of Mo-100 have been determined by measuring cross sections in (d, p), (p, d), (He-3, a), and (He-3, d) reactions on Mo-98,Mo-100 and Ru-100,Ru-102 targets. The deduced nucleon occupancies reveal significant discrepancies when compared with theoretical calculations; the same calculations have previously been used to determine the nuclear matrix element associated with the decay probability of double-beta decay of the Mo-100 system.

The pairing properties of the neutrinoless double-beta decay (0 nu 2 beta) candidate Mo-100 have been studied, along with its daughter Ru-100, to provide input for nuclear matrix element calculations relevant to the decay. The (p, t) two-neutron transfer reaction was measured on nuclei of Ru-102,Ru-100 and Mo-100,Mo-98. The experiment was designed to have particular sensitivity to 0(+) states up to excitation energies of similar to 3 MeV with high energy resolution. Solar neutrino interactions with the double- $β$ decay nuclei ${}^{82}{Se}, {}^{100}{Mo}$ , and ${}^{150}{Nd}$

Solar neutrinos interact within double-beta decay (ββ) detectors and contribute to backgrounds for ββ experiments. Background contributions due to solar neutrino interactions with ββ nuclei of ⁸²Se, ¹⁰⁰Mo, and ¹⁵⁰Nd are evaluated. They are shown to be significant for future high-sensitivity ββ experiments that may search for Majorana neutrino masses in the inverted-hierarchy mass region. In conclusion, the impact of solar neutrino backgrounds and their reduction are discussed for future ββ experiments.

High energy-resolution measurement of the ${}^{82}{Se} ({}^{3}{He}, t) {}^{82}{Br}$ reaction for double- $β$ decay and for solar neutrinos

For this study, a high-resolution (³He,t) charge-exchange experiment at an incident energy of 420 MeV has been performed on the double beta (ββ) decay nucleus ⁸²Se. A detailed Gamow-Teller (GT^-) strength distribution in ⁸²Br has been extracted, which provides information to the ββ-decay nuclear matrix elements. Three strong and isolated transitions, which are to the 75, 1484 and the 2087 keV states in ⁸²Br, are found to dominate the low-excitation region below ≈ 2.1 MeV. Above 2.1 MeV a sudden onset of a strong GT fragmentation is observed. The degree of fragmentation resembles a situation found in the neighboring Amore »« less

Determination of the direct double- $β$ -decay $Q$ value of ${}_{96}{Zr}$ and atomic masses of ${}_{90 - 92, 94, 96}{Zr}$ and ${}_{92, 94 - 98, 100}{Mo}$

Experimental searches for neutrinoless double-β decay offer one of the best opportunities to look for physics beyond the standard model. Detecting this decay would confirm the Majorana nature of the neutrino, and a measurement of its half-life can be used to determine the absolute neutrino mass scale. Important to both tasks is an accurate knowledge of the Q value of the double-β decay. The LEBIT Penning trap mass spectrometer was used for the first direct experimental determination of the ⁹⁶Zr double-β decay Q value: Q_ββ=3355.85(15) keV. Rearrangement of valence neutrons in the neutrinoless double- $β$ decay of ${}^{136}{Xe}$

Here, a quantitative description of the change in ground-state neutron occupancies between ¹³⁶Xe and ¹³⁶Ba, the initial and final state in the neutrinoless double-β decay of ¹³⁶Xe, has been extracted from precision measurements of the cross sections of single-neutron-adding and -removing reactions. Comparisons are made to recent theoretical calculations of the same properties using various nuclear-structure models. These are the same calculations used to determine the magnitude of the nuclear matrix elements for the process, which at present disagree with each other by factors of 2 or 3. The experimental neutron occupancies show some disagreement with the theoretical calculations.
