We study the application of a magnetic field transverse to the easy axis, Ising direction in the quasi-two-dimensional kagome staircase magnet, Co₃V₂O₈, induces three quantum phase transitions at low temperatures, ultimately producing a novel high field polarized state, with two distinct sublattices. New time-of-flight neutron scattering techniques, accompanied by large angular access, high magnetic field infrastructure allow the mapping of a sequence of ferromagnetic and incommensurate phases and their accompanying spin excitations. Also, at least one of the transitions to incommensurate phases at μ₀H_c1~6.25 T and μ₀H_c2~7 T is discontinuous, while the final quantum critical point at μ₀H_c3~13 T ismore » continuous.« less

Quantum phase transition and ferromagnetism in $C o_{1 + x} Sn$

The onset of ferromagnetism in cobalt-tin alloys is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The Co_1+xSn alloys were prepared by rapid quenching from the melt and form a modified hexagonal NiAs-type crystal structure for 0.45 ≤ x ≤ 1. The magnetic behavior is described analytically and by density-functional theory using supercells and the coherent-potential approximation. The excess of Co concentration x, which enters the interstitial 2d sites in the hypothetical NiAs-ordered parent alloy CoSn, yields a Griffiths-like phase and, above a quantum critical point (x_c ≈ 0.65), a quantum phase transition to ferromagnetic order. Spin liquid and quantum phase transition without symmetry breaking in a frustrated three-dimensional Ising model

We show that the highly frustrated transverse-field Ising model on the three-dimensional pyrochlore lattice realizes a first-order phase transition without symmetry breaking between the low-field Coulomb quantum spin liquid and the high-field polarized phase. The quantum phase transition is located quantitatively by comparing low- and high-field series expansions. Furthermore, the intriguing properties of the elementary excitations in the polarized phase are investigated. We argue that this model can be achieved experimentally by applying mechanical strain to a classical spin-ice material composed of non-Kramers spins such as Ho₂Ti₂O₇. Antiferromagnetic character of the quantum phase transition in the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice

In this work we provide a unified, comprehensive treatment of all operators that contribute to the antiferromagnetic, ferromagnetic, and charge-density-wave structure factors and order parameters of the hexagonal Hubbard Model. We use the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm to perform a systematic, carefully controlled analysis in the temporal Trotter error and of the thermodynamic limit. We expect our findings to improve the consistency of Monte Carlo determinations of critical exponents. We perform a data collapse analysis and determine the critical exponent β = 0.898 (37) for the semimetal-Mott insulator transition in the hexagonal Hubbard Model. Quantum Ising model in one dimension is an exactly solvable example of a quantum phase transition. We investigate its behavior during a quench caused by a gradual turning off of the transverse bias field. The system is then driven at a fixed rate characterized by the quench time {tau}{sub Q} across the critical point from a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase.
