Tourmaline occurs as an accessory mineral in five of six zones in the Li-, B-, Be-, Nb-, Ta-, and Sn-enriched, internally zoned Bob Ingersoll No. 1 pegmatite located in the Precambrian core of the southern Black Hills near Keystone, South Dakota. Mineral recorders of pegmatite internal evolution: REE contents of tourmaline from the Bob Ingersoll pegmatite, South Dakota

Trace rare earth elements (REE) have been determined by radiochemical neutron activation analysis for tourmaline samples from an internally zoned, rare-element, granitic pegmatite, located in the Black Hills, South Dakota. The Total REE concentrations range from 40 ppm-0.2 ppm, and are highest in tourmaline from the exomorphic halo (country rock) and pegmatite border zone. Chondrite-normalized patterns are highly fractionated from light REE to heavy REE; and REE concentrations decrease in tourmaline from the outer wall zone and first intermediate zone, through the inner wall zone and third intermediate zone, to lowest levels in the pegmatite core. Experimental evidence has shown the importance of boron on the crystallization behavior of granitic systems; however, the intercrystalline and intracrystalline distribution of boron in mineral phases crystallizing from granitic systems is not well documented. The distribution of boron between coexisting phases in the Tip Top pegmatite, South Dakota, is as follows: beryl ca = quartz ca = triphylite ca = montebrasite ca = potassium feldspar < biotite < albite < muscovite < spodumene << tourmaline. Boron isotope geochemistry as a tracer for the evolution of brines and associated hot springs from the Dead Sea, Israel

A boron isotope study combined with analyses of elemental boron, lithium, and chlorine is used to suggest that brines from the Dead Sea and on-shore hypersaline thermal springs (Hamme Yesha, Hamme Zohar, and Hamme Mazor) are the products of interaction of evaporated seawater with detrital sediments. Oxygen isotope systematics and reservoir evolution of the Northwest Geysers, CA

Whole-rock oxygen isotope values ({delta}{sup 18}O) for metagraywacke from the Northwest Geysers reservoir show systematic variations with respect to depth, location and reservoir characteristics. Whole-rock {delta}{sup 18}O values for metagraywacke decrease from approximately +15 per mil near the present surface (+750 m msl) to +2 to +4 per mil deep within the present steam reservoir (-2600 m msl). Deep portions of the metagraywacke reservoir (-2000 to -2750 m msl) are recrystallized to a biotite-rich hornfels and have {delta}{sup 18}O values ranging from approximately +5 to +12 per mil.
