A series of differently cross-linked FEP-g-polystyrene proton exchange membranes has been synthesized by the preirradiation grafting method [FEP: poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-hexafluoropropylene)]. Divinylbenzene (DVB) and/or triallyl cyanurate (TAC) were used as cross-linkers in the membranes. It was found that the physical properties of the membranes, such as water-uptake and specific resistance, are strongly influenced by the nature of the cross-linker. Generally it can be stated that DVB decreases water-uptake and increases specific resistance; on the other hand TAC increases swelling and decreases specific resistance to values as low as 5.0 {Omega} cm at 60 C. Integration of a high oxygen permeability ionomer into polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell cathodes for high efficiency and power density

In this work, we present a study on the integration of a high oxygen permeability ionomer (HOPI) with high durability carbon supported platinum (Pt/C) catalysts to prepare cathode catalyst layers (CCLs) for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). A key motivation is the production of PEMFCs with high efficiency and durability for heavy-duty fuel cell vehicles. A solid-state current Pulse generator for in situ membrane resistance measurements by superimposed square current pulses in polymer electrolyte fuel cells was designed and built. The choice of the measuring technique and of parameters of the instrumentation was based on a critical analysis of the relevant electrochemical and physical processes. The inductance of the current pulse path is very low ({approx}5 nH), because the last stage of the generator is directly attached to the fuel cell.
