One of several methods developed to search for temporo-spatial patterns in the health variable, as an alternative method to overcome certain shortcomings that afflict the usual techniques of studying the acute health effects of air pollution by multiple regression analyses, were used in an epidemiological study of asthmatic attacks in two areas of New York City (Harlem and Brooklyn), where aerometric monitoring stations are located to provide data on daily fluctuations in air pollution levels. Sulfur dioxide and smokeshade were used as independent variables in the studies.

This report presents a careful statistical reanalysis of one data set from the EPA-sponsored CHESS epidemiological studies which was collected in greater New York in 1970-71. The original analysis of this data set linked increased asthma attack rates in human populations with suspended particulate and suspended sulfate air pollution. The reevaluation of the data reported here does not support the hypothesis of a positive association between the incidence of asthma attacks and levels of suspended particulate or suspended ambient sulfate levels as suggested by CHESS researchers. Study constraints and limitations raise serious questions about the validity of the collected data.

Health and the urban environment: air pollution and family illness. II. Two acute air pollution episodes in New York City

New York City was under an air pollution episode from November 29 to December 24, 1962 during which sulfur dioxide levels were recorded in excess of 0.3 ppm continuously for up to 40 hours. The highest reading was 2.4 ppm. Between October 14 and October 28, 1963, a second air pollution episode occurred and similar meteorologic conditions prevailed except that temperatures were higher and there was less pollution due to space heating. Increased levels of carbon monoxide and total hydrocarbons were also reported.

Some questions associated with statistical inference of doubly stochastic Poisson processes are discussed. This general model appears to be of value in studying a number of problems in environmental health in which the factors which affect the rate at which certain diseases occur cannot be deterministically characterized. The model's applicability to a study of air pollution and incidence of acute respiratory diseases in the New York City area is examined.

Full shift breathing zone and environmental air samples were collected.
